Moving service recommendations from San Francisco to Zurich

Hello, everyone!

My wife and I will be moving from San Francisco to Zurich in August and are looking for recommendations for moving companies. We've been doing some research but would love to hear recommendations from others that have been through a similar move.

I would also like to hear thoughts of shipping through a moving company versus bringing extra checked in baggage in our flight. Is it recommended to bring as many non-bulky items as possible on the flight and pay the extra fees (about 90 CHF per extra bag) or just send as much as possible through moving companies?

Thanks a lot! We look forward to our new life in Zurich. =)

Re: Moving service recommendations from San Francisco to Zurich

Hi Q,

When I moved from the US to Zurich, I used Rainier Overseas Movers (http://www.rainieros.com/) based out of Seattle. They were extremely helpful and thorough. They sub-contract with highly rated local movers. On the Swiss side of the move, they priced out various sub-contractors and we ended going with a Dutch mover because they were significantly cheaper than the Swiss counterpart. In the end, I found them very helpful and receptive to my limited moving budget. On the other hand, they can be a little slow to respond because they provide as many options at varying price points and shipment times. Hope this helps and good luck in Zurich!

I read up on international moves on movingscam.com - really helpful, but of course, it's a forum. I think we used southwinds, but rainer was also highly recommended. On the European end, it was a german company, but our stuff arrived from North Carolina in 3 weeks. Any complaints i had were with the US movers, who did some stupid packing. Small stuff, really. I had a couple of bookcases and lampshades damaged. But they were very good with more delicate items. Also, be careful with the insurance declaration. We got very little for our bookcases - they were inexpensive, but i really disliked the insurer's handling. We moved a full container.

Thanks, edot, that is really helpful.

I'll start contacting companies to have them take a visual survey of our apartment to get an idea of cost.

I have also heard good things about Southern Winds.
