How long for household goods to clear customs?

Just curious. I know timing can vary... but I'm not sure what to expect! Our things were supposed to arrive in Hamburg today.

Is it coming by full container or is it a less-than-container-load? Transit from Hamburg can vary - from 3 days after arrival in the port until 2 weeks after arrival. The actual clearance should be a matter of minutes, if prepared and done by an agent, but for customer purposes one would count a full day, as most often it is not possible to deliver the same day..

Just to give you an idea - have you sent off all original forms and the 18.44?

Re: How long for household goods to clear customs?

It's a full container and we have filled out all the forms (I think!) and sent it to our agent. They said our ship should arrive and they would tell us when we can organize a delivery, but they haven't given time estimates, so I was curious what other people have seen.

Re: How long for household goods to clear customs?

Our container arrived in Basel on 6/26. We were told it would clear customs by 6/28. We received a call on 7/1 to schedule delivery. Delivery was scheduled for 7/4.

I'm sure it depends a great deal on many factors, such as the city, shipping/moving company, time of year, etc. etc.

On our moving day they parked the container down the road (no place by our house to do it) and then they drove a van down, loaded it up, brought it back, unloaded it, etc until it was all in. They took away all the paper, cardboard, trash, etc. It went really smooth. We helped unwrap chairs and unpack boxes. They arrived at our house at 8am and were gone by 1:30. (They even took a lunch break.)

Good luck!

Alright, depending the way the container will take, I would say you will have approx 2 days from arrival, to unload, register paperwork etc. - then the container should be available for pick-up. Depending if they booked the onforwarding on time (read: two weeks ago), you should be able to count for it by the end of the week - that should be a realistic timeframe.

May also be early next week, but they want to deliver this asap, to avoid detention and demurrage fees (could happen, if the container takes too long from arrival until returned empty, primariliy if they did not book the on-forwarding on time - be wary if they bill you such fees..).

Good luck!

They may have to do a something similar procedure for us. The main road in our city (TINY city) is small already, but there is road work complicating it further.

Re: How long for household goods to clear customs?

I'm curious too as our stuff arrived in Basel via air on Aug 3 and we haven't heard anything yet. I'm getting a bit worried as I start work on Monday and can't take time off to stay at home for the shipment. Fingers crossed!

My car is supposed to arrive in Basel soon, we'll see if it goes through faster! Hope so!
