Best way to avoid high fees for short-term housing?

Already started to look into the short-term housing for our Jan 2014 arrival to Bern. UMS worries me - the fees are shocking. There must be other short-term residences that don't seem to have fees, or at least not ones of 180%! We will only be in Bern for 18 months while my husband teaches at the university. With his salary of only CHF90Kish, housing costs remain my main concern. We have no children, so a small place will be fine.

Any other recs on short-term places besides UMS? My husband is leaning towards just paying CHF 2200 for a furnished place in Bern, storing everything in the USA, and just enjoying the time - as opposed to the hassle of shipping our stuff, finding a real Swiss apartment, furnishing it, etc.

I seek your advice while we await the last of his paperwork in the mail.
