How do I use the washing machine?

Yes I'm serious, I don't know how to use the washing machine.

I moved into a new apartment about 5 weeks ago, then pretty much straight away I had to go away for work for a few weeks.

When I got back I realised I had no idea how to use the washing machine.
I have a card that I have to insert into a small machine thing, and when I do it comes up with numbers on the display like 2.50 or 3.50 or 0.5 and constantly beeps at me.

I got frustrated so I went and washed my clothes in the bath tub (don't laugh!).

It's kind of embarrassing, particularly now that it's been a while since I moved in. So I'm too embarrassed to ask anyone at work or the real estate agent.

So I'm asking you guys, if anyone here knows how to use these washing machines with the card insert thing?

Cheers,
Nickasaurous

The "card thing" is probably the electricty meter which shows the costs in CHF. The moment you put your card in and the washing machine works its starts to count.
What brand and modell is your machine?

Well, no guarantee for success, but my old system was like this:

- Put on electricity/open water tap
- Put in Card, select programm (lumpsum cost being debited at this point)
- Removal of card
- Start program

At the end
- Remove wet clothes
- Re-enter the card -- there should be a button to remit the remaining balance on your card, wait for new total to show and remove card
(mustn't forget that! Not only do you lose money otherwise, but the person after me may have trouble starting the program if there was still excess credit, not sure how that came to happen..)

Et voilà... pretty much the same with the dryer.

But, major question - is there any credit on the card at all? In my case I had to re-charge it by handing the card to our caretaker, as the re-charging station in the house had been plied open a couple of times..

Hope that helps

Either that, or it shows the price of the load. You'll need to 'add' money to your card before you're able to use it. This is either done using a machine (that should be mounted somewhere in your laundry area), by web (the web address is usually printed on the card), or at a local shop.

Your best option would be to ask the hauswart(caretaker). It's their job to help you with things like this.

Asking it on EF is not embarrassing?

Best is to ask one of your neighbours. They use the machine and will know exactly what to do.

Re: How do I use the washing machine?

There are 2 types I have come across in Switzerland.

One is a credit card size, that will need money put on it before you can use it, had to get the Haus person to do it.

The other is chunky and gets charged to one' electric bill.

think your one is the credit card type. Whenever you get it topped up with money, perhaps ask someone if they know the charges for using the machine. usually different charge for 40 & 60 degrees. If you have a dryer there is a charge I think per 30 minutes.

Oh BTW usually the washing/dryer machines have this thing when they switch off during the lunch-breaks & start up again when that break is finished. It is because of the surge during lunch-time when a number of people go home to cook their lunch. The timings vary from place to place.

good luck

Re: How do I use the washing machine?

every machine is different and it's really complicated sometimes. Don't be afraid. If there is a nice old lady in the building, she would be very happy to show you and you needn't feel embarrassed. Much easier find out from someone who uses the same system!

I agree... don't be embarrassed to ask the Hauswart or a neighbor. I'm sure many of the new tenants there have found themselves in the same situation.

Re: How do I use the washing machine?

Take a photo of the controls and Google the model number. You can study the picture without feeling under pressure and lookup the user manual online.

That's what I did

As a bloke I pride myself on being able to operate anything. However household devices can be quite challenging, therefore I find it helpful break down the problem, a bit like this.

Re: How do I use the washing machine?

My Hauswart explained the booking system and where to find everything, but not how to work the cardreader or the machines. Fortunately all the manuals are kept in a folder in the laundry, so I took them away one night and read them with the help of my translate app.

Then it turned out I was still doing it wrong, so I asked my lovely (older) neighbour who demonstrated how to use the cardreader. FYI mine is the same as Village Idiot describes. Make sure you find out if you need to do something at the end of your wash -- I have to reinsert my card while holding down a button and I get some money back (I think), or at least stop being charged.
