Finding an apartment is more difficult than finding a job! (Lausanne/Switzerland)

So my suggestion is: first see if you can find an apartment then apply for a job!

Jokes apart, as mentioned in other threads as well, its very tough for foreigners to find an apartment here! As non-eu it wasn't easy to get job, but it seems like finding an apartment is much more difficult!

So be prepared!

People know this. La Cote is a nightmare, GE is even worse than LS, if anything can be. When one is sitting on a train to work, though, watching the day wake up over the mountains and the lake, one realizes why.

Widen your search area. There are plenty of other places like Yverdon or Fribourg, both of which are in easy commuting distance of Lausanne by car or public transport. Lots of smaller villages inbetween too that are possible for rental properties. Unless your permit is tied to your employer/work canton you should be able to find something.

Thanks for suggestion. I am aware that it's difficult to find an apartment.

But wondering how a landlord can ask for one year rent and 3 months deposit in advance!

If he wants 1 year's rent plus a 3 month deposit then it's best left alone. The 3 month deposit is all you should need to pay up front, the rent will be paid on a monthly basis.

if that's the case go to the unil/epfl website or ask in the cafes/bars. if your single go for the colocation and get to know people- don't bother otherwise unless you have 2000+ to spend.

Re: Finding an apartment is more difficult than finding a job! (Lausanne/Switzerland)

Finding job - not so hard, you either find one or you don't.
Getting visa - painful but straightforward and the employer does all the paperwork for Non-EU
Finding apartment (cheap, local) - definitely the trickier step, and probably takes more investment of time than applying for the job (especially since my husband only applied for one job and got it!)....

If you are non-Eu though, I wouldn't be touching any sort of apartment agreement until you've got the work permit sorted. And quite likely landlords won't be interested at all in talking to you until you have that permit sorted out...
