Light DIY work (drilling a small hole in wall) in apartment?

Hi all,

Background:

My apartment in Bern is fairly typical and has lots of thick concrete walls.

Unfortunately, these walls soak up wifi signal by an impressive amount to the point where 5 GHz wireless is completely unusuable from another room and speeds on 2.4 GHz is moderate (~2-10 Mbps actual throughput, after accounting for interference and network overhead -- I've clocked gear in the same room as the router getting ~100 Mbps of actual throughput).

This has been reasonably acceptable up until now as our internet connectivity has been slower than the capabilities of the wireless network but we're upgrading to a faster connection in January and would like to take full advantage of the increased speed from anywhere in the apartment.

I've attempted to use powerline networking to connect the various rooms, but the rooms are on different circuits and the breakers have low-pass filters which prevent the networking signals from passing. I'd like to run an ethernet cable from the router (which is in the living room, centrally located) to my home office/computer room. (Or, according to my wife, the "man cave".)

In order to run network cable to this room I would need to nail in cable holders along the baseboard and then drill a small (~5-8mm) hole through either the interior wall or interior doorframe. There are no pipes, cables, or other potential obstructions in this portion of the wall.

The door itself seals tightly against the frame when closed, so there's no pre-existing gap I could use.

Naturally, I would make it as discreet as possible and put it at floor level, not at eye level or anything.

Question:

In general, is this permissible?

I realize it'd be completely unreasonable to do major changes to the interior of the apartment, but I have no idea if drilling a small hole in the wall would be acceptable. Any thoughts?

Many thanks in advance!

My experience is that you are allowed to do any modification you want to the apartment, as long as you return the flat in its original state when you leave (and at your own costs, of course). This is always the case unless the tenant after you accepts the modifications you have done, in which case the responsibility of putting back the apartment in its original condition is transferred to them.

My advice: give a call to the agency or the landlord (depending who you are in contact with usually) and inform them that you want to drill this hole, and that you will return it in its original condition as you leave.

Nothing more should be expected from you
