Bern - city or nearby

So, It looks like I will be moving to Bern.
Work place will be in Bümpliz-Oberbottigen.

Where to choose a place to live? Is it better to look at Oberbottigen, Bümpliz, Köniz or maybe closer to the city?

For me it's important to be near working place (30 minutes with a bycicle), a lot of area for waking, running, cycling and not to be "in-the-middle-of-nowhere"

How to chose part of the city?

Re: Bern - city or nearby

Given the information you've provided, I'd pick Bümpliz. It's close enough to the city without paying city prices, but not really out in the sticks either. The train connections are better/more frequent to the city and you'd be right by work. Plus there's a nice forest area where you can ride your bike. Good luck with your move.

Köniz is pretty handy, as would be Niederwangen.

Welcome to the forum.

Winter is coming along with difficult two wheel riding conditions!

You might prefer to live near the number 32 bus route to work, and Bümpliz has many attractive areas.

Re: Bern - city or nearby

Agree. My only thought on Niederwangen is that OP might find it a bit too "in the middle of nowhere" for his taste. (compared to Köniz or Bümpliz)

My first time here. First i would like to say hello to participants on discussion, and secondly i think that Koniz is a nice place. I saw some really nice picture online, and really attracted my interest.

Hy everyone, and thanks for welcomings

I have read that Bümpliz is the place with the most foreigner. I will be blunt and ask - it's still safe for a woman to walk alone in the neighborhood?

Re: Bern - city or nearby

Bümpliz is an ugly district of Bern: public housing and bedroom city.
I wouldn't describe it as unsafe. I'd rather go to Köniz or Kappelenbrücke/Eymattstrasse which are 2-3 km on the other side of the forest.

Bümplitz- the name makes me laugh, as when I was a child growing up in Romandie, and we wanted to say 'in the middle of nowhere'we always used 'Bümplitz' -never been though.

Re: Bern - city or nearby

Parts of Bümpliz, especially along the 32 Bus and number 7 tram routes, are not exactly ugly.
If the OP is pedalling to work, he would need a backup bus route for those mornings when it is too wet and icy to cycle to work.

http://map.search.ch/bern/bottigenstr.?poi=verkehr

If he lives in Köniz or Kappelenbrücke the journey would be much longer, than hopping on a 32 bus.

Re: Bern - city or nearby

As a woman I don't feel unsafe walking alone in Bümpliz even in the dark, though I don't live there only work there, the latest I would be walking alone is 20.00 to 21.00 at night.

I must admit the first time I was walking near the concrete tower blocks I was a bit on edge, but only because visually it reminded me of places I would never go near in the UK.

Personally I choose not to live there, not because I would feel unsafe there, I just prefer other areas.

Re: Bern - city or nearby

The posh areas are near the river, south of the Bern town centre. In one area (Muri - Gümligen) there is a small tax advantage, but the rentals are much higher than the tax gain.

I would assume if you intend cycling to work, then you would not have a car. You should then live near the public transport, on the tram no. 7 route.

Now that the Yugoslavian situation has calmed down, and most of the trouble makers have gone back home, Bümpliz is not too bad. My son lives there, in Alemannenstrasse, and he is very fussy!

Near Bümpliz is a big shopping mall, with an adventure pool and a multi screen cinema, it is known as West Side http://www.westside.ch/en-GB/home.aspx

Brünnen/Bethlehem are closer to Westside.

I have lived here for more than one year and never seen a posh area so far, but I am quite picky!

Zuzi, welcome to the forum and most probably to my company! And...I also speak your language fluently, so I would be glad to answer to any specific questions via PM!

The best tip I can give you is to stay away from Bumpliz! I have lived there in the first 5 months as part of my relocation package temporary apartment and it was the ugliest place I have ever lived in my life! Then I moved to the old city, but I was chasing for my flat for 5 months, nice central properties are quite rare. My second choice was Breitenrain-Lorraine and third - Krchenfeld. However, they are both far away from Bumpliz and also expensive...

Weissenbuhl is a good compromise - quite close to Bumpliz, not so expensive, close to Marzili beach and there is a wood nearby. Also very safe and quiet, as the most of Berne.

Good luck!

Re: Bern - city or nearby

Try a Google street view of Bottigenstrasse 46, Bern, Switzerland.

For me this isn't exactly the ugliest place in Switzerland, but I agree there are better looking places. This street view was made just before the tram number 7 tracks were laid, so I think about 2 years ago (?) and unfortunately there is no more Street View going west, after number 48.

Now take a Google street view look at Lorrainestrasse 32, Bern, Switzerland, near where Nixs lives.

Or Weissensteinstrasse 51, Bern, Switzerland, (it is where my daughter lives): not a big improvement over Bottigenstrasse 46, Bern are they?
