Wohngenossenschaft / Baugenossenschaft, "Community Housing"?

Sorry for the german words in the title, I have no idea what these are called in English... basically these are housing below market rate, run by the community themselves.

I'm seriously into the "Genossenschaft" model of Switzerland, not mentioning these units are rented out massively under the market price (-40-50%).

Just a question: how does one get one of these? I know a couple of expat guys who found some for themselves, they all told me they were in a good place at a good time... any other hints some of you may know?

Re: Wohngenossenschaft / Baugenossenschaft, "Community Housing"?

I found one through Immogate or something like that. Absolutely reasonable price (even for the area) and had a great time. You pay to join the Genossenschaft but then it is similar to the 3 month rent you need to pay in advance when you rent an apartment from any other landlord. I only have the best experience with the Genossenschaft I rented from in SH.

AFAIK, they currently don't even maintain waiting-lists. At least not in Zurich.

The well known Baugenossenschaft called Kraftwerk1 has built a few new houses and are accepting applications from prospective tenants.

just outside Zürich limits (near Bhf. Stettbach) and technically in Dübendorf

The apartment you are talking about in Zürich are mostly not on the market (demand >>> supply), from my own experience. You have to do your own research.

Re: Wohngenossenschaft / Baugenossenschaft, "Community Housing"?

6 years later I'm still looking :-) now that we got a family I'm doing a lot of walks with the little one around the area (8050 Zürich) and am discovering a lot of these lovely, family friendly places that are built like a small settlement as a closed unit in itself - they seems to be all genossenschaft-based. I'm checking on all their websites and everything says "currently not accepting applications", only internally

Seems like a sect you need to get into somehow by marrying one of the members

You can still write them.

For example:

If you rent slightly on the outskirts, chances are better.

This is one of the biggest in Zürich . I am staying in one of their housing units.Yes it is very much cheaper than than others. Simply contact them and they will tell you how to proceed.
