Landlord refuses to pay for ant resolution

Dear All,

Last year we had many ants in an upstairs bedroom; this year they are in the kitchen. Last year the landlord paid for Rentokil to have a go; this year he says he won't pay and the ants come in to the house only because there is food. Remember, they are in the kitchen - yes, there is food.

Any advice gratefully received here - do I have to suck up the cost of Rentokil? I know there are other methods like poisoned powder etc but I don't fancy having that in the kitchen not do I want to wait however long for any Eco-friendly remedy to take effect. I'm not looking for any killing solutions but to find out if the landlord is obligated to fix this or not.

Thanks,

Rachel

It's your problem, not the landlord's.

I don't think it's my problem that the Landlord has ants nesting in the walls of th property he owns.

Since ants are considered a self-limiting problem (they go away by themselves later in the spring), the landlord cannot be expected to pay for their elimination.

Meaning it is your problem to solve. If the owner contributed it was because of kindness. Sort out the food source issue and you will get rid of them

Re: Landlord refuses to pay for ant resolution

Go to a pharmacy and ask for Ameisen-köder and place them near where the infestation seems to be.

The ants are attracted to the gel inside the box and they take it to feed the queen. Dead queen, dead colony.

We get f*%&ing ants every year and have to go through the same rigmarole...

I would guess ... if all or most of the apartments in your block have an ant issue then it's the landlord's problem, else it's yours.

Re: Landlord refuses to pay for ant resolution

I highly doubt that the rentokil people used less toxic solutions than what you can buy from the pharmacy or hardware store...

The basic products work...or just look at those ants as a natural part of the life cycle and be grateful that they do go away again on a seasonal basis...unlike in warmer climates....

Re: Landlord refuses to pay for ant resolution

On a more helpful note, if it hasn't rained for a few days they might be after water, rather than food...

If chemicals don't work, why don't you try firearms?

That how Nippon in the UK works. Yes they do come back every year.

First time I have heard of anyone contacting Rentokil for ants, bet that was on the expensive side.

My mum used to send us Nippon ant killer then got paranoid that she would be somehow arrested for sending poison overseas so stopped. Now we have to buy the stuff here. Works OK but not as quick as Nippon.

She used to go out and buy some new t-shirts for me so she could "hide" the tube in them before packaging it in a jiffy bag. Bless

Re: Landlord refuses to pay for ant resolution

Ants really hate lavender perfume and peppermint oil. Try and buy some seeds, and crush them lightly, or just cut some stalks, and spread them around the kitchen. Or sprinkle the peppermint oil around the cupboards.

All insects need water, try placing water outside in the garden.

You might be able to kill them with Nippon, but if they are in the building you need some cooperation from your neighbours.
