Experience with Kaylan or Total Umzug?

Hi,

We are moving soon and have got cheap quotes from these two companies. Does anyone have recent experience with them please?

Thank a lot!
Jen

Re: Experience with Kaylan or Total Umzug?

We had a good experience with Kaylan for moving. They did a good job and put everything back together. No damage. I don't think they estimated the amount of work accurately though. It was more than anticipated. I wasn't as impressed with the cleaning and neither was my landlord. But the moving part was quite good. We used them in early 2012.

Thanks edot :-) We're leaning towards Kaylan. Those two companies are 2k less than others we have approached. Price difference is crazy.

Re: Experience with Kaylan or Total Umzug?

Do you have a fixed price or hourly estimate? If hourly, i'd want them to come and look at the space. Good luck! Moving here is a special kind of thing.

Re: Experience with Kaylan or Total Umzug?

Make sure the price you are quoted is fixed and not subject to any additional costings in the event they underestimate on the time/manpower needed, use more packing materials than anticipated etc. Some friends got seriously done over this way when they moved a few years back.

It should state in the Terms & Conditions on the quote what, if any, additional charges can be made, so study it carefully.

We got quoted by Total Umzug, in addition to two others. They were the cheapest by far and assured me the quote was fixed. The guy went as far as saying that even if it took them all day (the quote was for 4-5 hours, 2 removalists and 1 removalist/disassembler starting at 0700) and more trips than the projected two, that the price would not change.

In the end, the move was handled privately. Next time, that will absolutely not be the case and I regret not using Total Umzug. Lesson well and truly learnt!

A "cheap" quote can in fact turn out to be not so cheap in the end.

Far too many people have ended up with final moving costs well in excess of what was quoted. The mover can justify all these additional costs and the client has no option but to pay.

So please do read the fine print before signing anything.

Re: Experience with Kaylan or Total Umzug?

Thanks all.

Kaylan offered me a fixed price if we went with them for cleaning but we are using cleaners we know.
So I need to now negotiate a price ceiling - estimate is 8 hours, so would want a ceiling at 9 or 10.

Thanks re the advice double checking re additional costs on the day. Will get on to it. And need to check excess for insurance.

I am tempted with Total Umzug but I am yet to find a single person who has used them.

Thanks again!

None of my clients have ever used them so I cannot help you out here.

Are you moving locally? And when? We are approaching the very busy moving season and this makes it more difficult to find suppliers with availability.

Not all moving companies have their own cleaners, most outsource it. So there is no real advantage to the person moving.

Best of luck with the move.

Re: Experience with Kaylan or Total Umzug?

Here's a recent thread with several EF member recommendations for Total Umzug and also for their cleaning services (Total Reinigung) moving/cleaning company recommendation [ZH]

They did an excellent job of our clean, hence my deep regret for not also engaging them for the move.

Good luck with whomever you eventually choose.

Re: Experience with Kaylan or Total Umzug?

Hi,
Just to update...we did use Total Umzug. It was a fixed price and they kept to it, but they underestimated by half and had to do two runs. The main guy was great. His helpers had no enthusiasm and weren't very professional - walking through our neighbours private garden without permission, quite grumpy.
Quite a lot of our furniture got scratched too.

We regret not paying an extra 1000CHG and using Alpha.

Good luck to anyone moving!

Re: Experience with Kaylan or Total Umzug?

Great experience with Total Umzug and Total Reinigung (same guys): quick, professional, affordable and fun.
The guys started moving the first boxes at 7.30am and at 3pm I was a free person having signed the handover documents. 2.5 rooms from Zurich to Basel, very smooth move.

Re: Experience with Kaylan or Total Umzug?

We used Total Umzug and to be honest we weren't impressed (this was 2014). The main guy was great but his two helpers weren't very professional. They accessed our property via my neighbours garden without permission and we lost a couple of small items in the move. They were helpful in trying to find / locate them but were never successful.

We then moved back to the UK (2015) and used Multi Transport. They were fantastic. They were recommended to me by a friend. I can highly recommend them :-)

I used Kaylan in the last 2 moves and according to their price, they were good. They were punctual and clean.

Total Umzug did our 4-room move within Zurich yesterday. They started at 7:15 and were done by 12. Efficient, friendly and great value for money. Will use them again if necessary!

total Umzug cleaned our new house, moved our belongings, and cleaned our old house a few months ago.. top service and a great helpful guy running the show. Would use them again without hesitation.

@krlock - do they charge per hour or per volume/sq meters?

Normally they assess what needs to be done and quote you a price for that. So depends on size of the apartment and what needs to be done
