car needed to live in the Geneva-Nyon area?

Hi all
I am very new to the site (joined a couple of hours ago) and have really enjoyed reading through some of these posts. All very helpful. My husband is already in Geneva and the kids and I will be moving there within the next year (kids aged 15 and 9). We have been living in France (Paris and Lyon) for the last 14 years WITHOUT a car. It has been very do-able. Is this also do-able in Switzerland without major hassle? I have no idea where we will live, but it could likely be Nyon from all I have read. I understand the train system is great, but is it nonetheless a car culture? Do we need to think about buying a car as part of our move to Switzerland?
Thanks for any advice!
Kristin

I think you could get by fine without a car in Nyon or surrounding villages.

The area is well served with plenty of busses and trains.

I lived in Nyon for several years without a car. Transport is very good
so you wont Need a car.

Thanks for your answers. I have been looking at some of the international schools and it seems that they also have good school bus systems, as well, so dropping and picking the kids wouldn't make a car a requirement either.

There is also a good car sharing system in Switzerland called Mobility. It's definitely worth checking out, as owning a car is very expensive in this country.

It's the opposite of a car culture, if you live nearby the train station. Move a mile from Nyon and it's a car culture. In the actual city, it's pricey to have a car and there might be a waiting list for an expensive parking place in some neighborhoods.
