Where in Luzern [looking for housing location recommendations]

Hi All!

My family and I are moving to Luzern! I'm going to be working in Zug.

Just wondering what areas in Luzern might be good to look for apartments? Or would I be more likely to find a house (more space plus garden for the kids)?

It would be good to be close to local facilities and transport links too.

Any tips? Thanks!

Re: Where in Luzern

Hope it's ok to give this a little bump with some more info.

It doesn't have to be Luzern we live in, but would be good to live in a town with a direct train or even bus link to Zug.

Any suggestions at all?

Re: Where in Luzern

This is a good starting point to get some impressions of the different areas in Luzern:

Anyway, great choice. Luzern is just small enough that it's cozy and easy to learn to get around in, and just big enough that it's bustling and there's always something going on.

Thanks for that, link looks like exactly what I need.

It's really hard to get a sense of somewhere from just looking at google maps!

Appreciate the info!

Amen to that! I found out just how hard when I looked at certain areas on the map thinking they were within easy cycling distance from the center only to find out they were on steep hills when I took an actual look at them on the ground.

Depending on budget, a good area to look for houses with gardens is Adligenswil/Udligenswil, also Buchrain and Meggen are closer to Zug for commuting by car - though I'm not sure about rail/bus connections for any of these smaller places. Fairly large expat communities live in those areas, too.
Have a look here for housing: http://www.homegate.ch/en
and here for transport connections: http://www.sbb.ch/en/timetable.html

Thanks guys, this is great stuff, really useful! I'm thinking it would be good to live relatively close to a train-station, so yeah, I need to figure out all the connections. I spent ages on sbb.ch and google maps last night, and didn't really get anywhere

Am I right in saying that any train that starts with S (ie S-21 etc.) are S-Bahn trains? I know that sounds like a stupid question.

And IR trains are more like faster / intercity ones?

The SBB also provides a useful glossary:

http://www.sbb.ch/en/timetable/timet...f-symbols.html

InterRegio
Swiftly from one region to another. Usually waits several minutes for late connecting trains. Usually air-conditioned coaches.
S-Bahn
Rapid Transit System. Serves all stations in the agglomeration. Semi-fast S-Bahn trains on the most important lines. Ticket validation by passengers, no train staff. Does not usually wait for late connecting trains. Self-service loading of bicycles into luggage van or bicycle compartment

I guess Luzern North, e.g. Ebikon, would be a good place to commute to Zug.

Re: Where in Luzern [looking for housing location recommendations]

And than you also have all other towns in between: Buchrain (with nice forest), Dierikon (housing on the hill), Root etc.

Take in account that almost every afternoon cars are waiting to re-enter Luzern from the direction of Zug. So living there, in between, will keep you off the worst. But you will still have some waiting on the highway exit.

Or you live in Luzern close to the HB (Railway station) and use very good public transport.

p.s.
just remembered this, where the highway exit for Buchrain connects to the road Ebikon-Root they have just started to build one of the biggest shoping mall in Switzerland. So there will be much more traffic there in after it is finished.
Mall of Switzerland!

I like the Neustadt. Not touristy, definitely not posh, lots of nice little restaurants, shops, parks. It has a really nice "Quartier" feeling. Probably cheaper than the other side of the Reuss as well. And very handy for the station (it takes me 7 minutes to walk there from where I live).

The IR trains (twice per hour) do Luzern-Zug in about 20 minutes.
