Renovating house in Coppet

Hi everyone,

my husband and I just bought our first house in Coppet, but - having had only rental appartments in Geneva up until now - we have no experience with renovation, especially not in this foreign country (we are both Dutch).

We'd like to paint the house (to make it feel new), re-do the carpet, build in a shower and break tru a wall (to attache a bedroom to the bathroom).

Do you have experience with doing this in canton Vaud? do you know good companies/freelancers? and what are good prices here?

Any tips are very welcome,
Thank you,

Renate

Re: Renovating house in Coppet

You have a number of possibilities, starting from doing all the work yourself (which from the way your message is worded sounds as that's probably not possible). That will be the cheapest.
The next is to manage all the work yourself, that means coordinating all the different workmen you need, getting offers from each, following them up as they carry out the work and so on. It does need some understanding of what you're doing and at least one of the jobs your mention (knocking down a wall) is significant and if it's a supporting wall, you'll definitely need to know what's going on.
The final way is to get someone to do the coordination work for you, it can be an architect, or a one-man "entreprise general". I would go for a small firm to do this, as I doubt a big firm is going to be interested. It's the sort of thing where you need recommendations from friends, as you have all sorts proposing this kind of activity and I'm afraid I can't really help. Note, this last alternative will be the priciest, but if don't have much experience I would go down that route.

Re: Renovating house in Coppet

hi catandmouse,

thank you for your advice. True, we're not big DIY'ers, but we're good researchers and we do have some knowledge. Plus, I'd like to have it done properly, so it can last for many years.

So, we're probably gonna go for the second option you mentioned. Therefore, we'd love recommendations of good workmen in the area.

You seem to know what you're talking about, do you have ideas of what such workmen would cost in canton Vaud? Rough estimation (probably by hour or m2?)

thank you for your kind suggestions!
