Looking for a house in Vevey-Montreux area

Hello all,

We are a family of two Phd students currently living in Lausanne. Since my wife works in a research center in Martigny, we are planning to move to somewhere in between Lausanne and martigny, ideally from Vevey to Montreux.

I was wondering what is the best city to live for a couple who are used to urban areas, weekend/night shopping, stores not too far, ... Any advice is strongly welcome.

And if anybody knows a way to easier find an apartment or knows an aprtment there, it is appreciated. We are both paid employees so problem is less.

Thanks a lot

Paying money to find a house in the Vevey

Dear all,

I have been looking to find a house to rent in the Vevy area and posted an anibis ad on this too.

Days ago somebody contacted me and said he can find a house for me if I pay him equivalent of the first month rent. He was a bit weird so I didn't decide immediately. For example he wanted to meet me in a restaurant and not in the agency he claimed to work (we-location in Lausanne). Has anybody here had such an experience? Is it legal? Should I trust him and give my dossier (copy of permit, salary receipt,..) to him?

Thanks a lot
Best

Re: Paying money to find a house in the Vevey

It sounds very fishy.

I wouldn't give any personal information or money to someone I meet in a restaurant

Re: Paying money to find a house in the Vevey

I don't think it would be illegal. But handing over your details to someone without any clear references would really not be a good idea - anywhere. Just think of the damage that can be done.

You could consider his offer if the person has an apartment available, and it's only a matter of viewing the apt and signing the contract.

Thanks for the reply. Just to make it clear. He wants the money after a contract is signed (well I'm not that stupid ). He just wanted my documents at the restaurant

His email is from an agency called we-location.ch whose website is down currently, making things more complicated

Thanks a lot. So you say I don't hand my document to him before visiting any appartment?

I would never trust anyone who contacted me out of the blue like that, I think you said it yourself when you said "He was a bit weird".
Don't do it, it all sounds very fishy to me.

Re: Paying money to find a house in the Vevey

I know someone who paid a 80k commission to a property finder in CH. They were very happy with their purchase.

It's not that unusual & happens in many countries to have an agent who acts for you.

I'm with J.Marple on this one. It sounds very fishy and I certainly wouldn't provide any personal info in the way of salary, etc. If you must deal direct do it only with the landlord him/herself.

It's not unusual to have an agent, of course. What I find very suspicious is having a meeting with a potential client in a restaurant.

Not very trustworthy.

The fact you're posting here indicates your gut tells you this is a scam. Listen to your gut.

Also, a quick Google search does not find anything on the company as you have named it. No website, no reviews, not even an address. Walk away. Don't return his calls, don't meet him, and don't give him your personal details.

I often have had meetings with a UK solicitor upstairs in the Selfridges hotel. Very discreet & you only need to but a coffee & can stay for hours.

Thanks a lot for your advice.
So my next question is: what are the agencies that receive money from you and, in exchnage, (really and seriously) find an appartment for you. In my exhaustive seraches I only found Foncia, which has done literally nothing for me in the recent 2 months.
P.S. : Does it violate the Forum's laws if I make a new thread for this?

Re: Paying money to find a house in the Vevey

As others may have said, there are loads of agencies out there who will "help" to find a place for you. They can charge around 5k depending on what you want them to do.
Services can range from helping with what documents you need, helping to understand contracts, helping to set up Swiscom or electricity, helping you to understand different areas to stay.. Even for a smaller fee they might just provide some help checking contracts and making sure you understand the language etc.

The key thing is "helping to".. No matter what you pay, the landlord will still decide who stays in the house, the agency can just introduce you and help with paperwork. If the agency says the can definitely find a house for you, it's a lie.

And the other key thing is, if you want this service, research the different companies, decide what you want from them, negotiate a price and then decide. I would not trust a company who came to me and then wants to meet in a cafe.

Edit .. Example reputable company (although not in your area)
Edit again .. I think they are your area!

He probably wasn't just a random solicitor who made an unsolicited ( pardon the pun) approach to you though was he?

Re: Paying money to find a house in the Vevey

Thanks a lot.
Actually I don't need almost any of the services you mentioned, I can buy my internet myself

What I need is a guaranty that if I apply for 10 appartments, they offer me at leat one of them! and I'm not the poorest/most inappropriate person in Switzerland

Is it an unrealistic expectation?
Thanks a lot for all your help again, by the way

I don't think any agency can "guarantee" you a flat, unless they are the letting agency as well. They can perhaps help you navigate the application process, but the idea they would guarantee you a flat if you paid X Francs...I don't know.

I would agree.. I had the services of a relocator.. Took all my details, what size of place did I want, where, how much, old. modern, garden, parking. Loads of details. They took copies of my documents.
Then I found a place myself after some random forum post

The agency takes all this stuff and helps you to apply.. That's it, the rest is up to the landlord. In some circumstances the advantage is that the agency may know the landlord or may know of places available before they are advertised.
