Muttenz with kids and a dog?

Things are starting to hot up a bit on our move to Basel next year. We are now seriously drawing up a short list of areas to live. My kids will go to the ISB and so we need to have an easy commute for them. I have recently been reading a bit on EF about Muttenz but the feed back seems mixed anyone live there? What are the positives and the drawbacks of living there? What areas are nice and which are to be avoided are the roads busy? Have seen a house on Gempengasse is that a busy street?

Wish list: a village feel, a few shops for essentials, cafe, bakery, supermarket etc, dog walking areas close by, easy commute to ISB (think this would be OK from what I read), easy commute to Novartis ( again seems OK from Muttenz), easy access in to Basel city, not too full of expats (before I offend any one I have nothing against them, I will be one myself, but having kids at the ISB there will be a danger if us living in a bubble and not really having a chance to integrate a bit locally if we also live somewhere with a high % of expat neighbours)

Any info gratefully recieved! Or indeed any areas we might not have thought about ...so far on the list Dornach, Arlesheim, Pfeffingen, Biel- Benken, Ettingen, Therwill and now Muttenz.

Big thank you x

Re: Muttenz with kids and a dog?

Have relatives in Muttenz and visit there frequently. It is easy commute to Basel by tram, and although Basel Land, it feels more of an extension of Basel. Basel Land is generally better tax wise. It will have the amenities, i.e. Coop, other small shops, but not really a village feel for me, more like Basel extension. It is also a bit too concrete for my tastes and does have some roads I would not like to live next to, but on the smaller streets it is quiet and very livable. One thing to be aware of, it is right there next to St. Jakobs stadium, and there is a lot of noise, disruption, traffic, and overall fan mess when there is games there. Do not get anywhere near there if you want peace and quiet. As for dogs, not sure. In the area I know, it is more concrete than green, but maybe there are some parks around.

Re: Muttenz with kids and a dog?

I go for walks quite often in Muttenz. It has a beautiful forest area with miles of accessible trails - located up the hill behind the Hallenbad. The views looking over Basel and into Germany are amazing. The bike paths in that area also takes you directly to Grun 80 Park. Plus access to the outdoor Pool at St. Jacobs is good for the kids. The trails along the Birs River are also nice to explore. I think Muttenz is beautiful if you are on the village church side of the tram line along or behind Muttenzerstrasse toward the athletic field. When you visit on a scouting trip, you will get a better feel of that area. Give me a shout if you want me to show you what I know of Muttenz - a nice walk to show you the green space. Just by driving around, you would never realize the farm land was even there (you can see it by satellite view to get an idea)

Re: Muttenz with kids and a dog?

Hi!

My wife and I have the option to move into a place in Muttenz. I have walked around the area and it seemed pretty decsent to me. Not sure where the negative comments on other threads are coming from.

I'm really curious though to hear how you got on? Have you moved in? Anything you can share that is good to know?

Thanks!

Re: Muttenz with kids and a dog?

Hi Onionboy we decided not to go for the house in the end as it was a little too small. If it had been bigger we would have gone for it! My husband said he thought the area was lovely. I think it's where in Muttenz rather than Muttenz itself that can pose a problem for some. So what I learnt was north was a little industrial and towards the football stadium was noisy at times but the rest seems great. The old part was what my husband liked most! Good luck with your move.

Don't get anywhere near a church either. Bells are rung at regular intervals here and could go on into the night.
