Where to live if kids go to ZIS Baden

Hi,

My partner and I will be moving to Zurich at the end of March, from South Africa. I am an EU citizen. Our kids are 12 and 4 years old, and will be attending Zurich international school in Baden. We would however like to live in Zurich.

I have very little knowledge of transport infrastructure in Zurich. I would be happy to take kids to school by train or car, whichever makes more sense.

Can anyone advise as to the best and most convenient areas to live in given that the school is in Baden, but that we would like to live in a "fun" part of Zurich? I am not sure if we can get the best of both worlds: convenience for school route but also a good city vibe? (Easy access to work is not an issue for us, as we work from home).

I am VERY ignorant wrt to all this, so any opinions, suggestions, viewpoints etc would be most appreciated.

Many thanks....

Before you move all that way, just for the ZIS in Baden, please check to see if that is really the case:

The news seems to say that the school may close.

The other branches are staying open.

And anyway - Baden IS the fun side of Zurich!

A later article (in German) from the 1st of October confirms it will close.

When you look at the ZIS website this information is found in the messages from the director. I couldn't find it anywhere else.

Wow. Thank you SO much for that information. I have not seen any news of this in the school's website, and I still need to find the Directors message that you refer to.

When I communicated with the school last year, they did not mention this, but that was before October.

I have emailed the school to ask for clarification, and will update as I hear from them.

Any recommendations for other international, English schools that can accommodate 4 and 13 year olds?

Thanks!

The ZIS schools are on the left side of Lake Zurich in Wädenswil, Kilchberg and Adliswil. The younger child will soon enter Kindergarten and later lower school in Wädenswil which is upstream, the older I guess Upper School in Adliswil downstream adjacent to the city border with Zurich.

http://www.zis.ch/page.cfm?p=2444

One possibilty is to look for something in Kilchberg (at lakeside, adjacent to Adliswil) from where your older one can easily reach school by him/herself by foot or bycicle up on the hill. It is also close to the city border and actually its an extension of the city, the borders are purely administrative and not visible from a birdseye view. From there you could bring the younger one to Wädenswil. There is a direct train from Kilchberg to Wädenswil every 30min and it takes 20 minutes. To get to the school, you need another 15min (including transfer at station Wädenswil) by bus up the hill.

If you want to live within the city borders you may want to try to find something on the left side of the lake (Wollishofen, Enge, Wiedikon), as that would be most practical. You then may drive up the lake to drop off first the older one and than the younger, if this is feasible - or again the older could make it by him/herself with public transport.

The third option would be to live close to the Wädenswil school where the younger one could walk by him/herself and the older could take the public transport by him/herself to Adliswil/Kilchberg, if needed. With this solution you bringing the children to school would be just optional, but not necessary. Wädenswil is 20min from the city border by train. It's a small town of 20.000 people at the lakeside and actually astonishingly much going on there in terms of cultural life for such a small place. And the area near the Wädenswil school is scenic nestled above peninsula "Au".

Manatee,

That is incredibly useful advice, thank you! I'm going to go through each of your suggested options carefully and will start making some decisions. Am also still waiting to hear from the school.

Once again, many thanks!

Re: Where to live if kids go to ZIS Baden

I wouldn't recommend allowing a child to walk alone to the Lower School until they were in at least grade 2.
This is not because I am against children walking per say. When my child was in Kindergarten in our local village he walked alone.
It is because most parents drive their child to school at Wadenswil and so the car park is not the safest place for a child alone. There are no dedicated footpaths through the car park and it can be very busy at pick off/drop off. It is a totally different scenario from a child walking to a local Swiss school.
Middle and upper school very easy for a child living locally to walk too.
