Moving from London to Zurich - moving estimates are too expensive! Alternatives pls?

Hi all,

I'm moving from London (Islington) to Zurich (seefield area, specific area still TBC) end of Feb. Very excited and we have been comparing prices with movers.

There's only two of us living in a small 1 bed flat in London. We are not moving any furniture. We will be moving clothes, household goods (Vitamix blender, kitchen gadgets), and 4 bicycles. We've compared prices with some movers based in Zurich (InterDean and DT Moving) - they sent a London based surveyer out to do an assessment. They're coming out to roughly 4,000 CHF!

I know everything is expensive in Switzerland but 4k CHF to move a handful of boxes is too much. I'm now considering other options including:

1) Find other cheaper moving companies. I tried the advert at the top right of the English Forum called France Removals http://www.franceremovals.com/ - their phone number is disconnected! Any other suggetions?

2) Hire a van and drive it to Zurich. It's only about a 10h drive so it is possible, however slight problem is I'm originally from the US and never drove in 9+ years in the UK therefore I don't have a UK license and cannot drive on UK roads. Does anyone know any companies that will drive my stuff over if I pack it? eg like a man with a van type service?

3) Fly back and forth - flights from LCY/LHR to Zurich are circa £200/each. For that price we can fly back and forth 2-3x over a weekend and just stuff our belongings in the check-in suitcases and even pay weight overages.

We don't have much stuff and we're willing to pack and box everything up just pick up and drop off in Zurich.

Any tips appreciated!

Regards

Re: Moving from London to Zurich - moving estimates are too expensive! Alternatives

Here are some ideas:

1. You could search in this forum (top right-hand corner of the screen, just below the ad) with the search-words "man with van" or just "van". There are/were some on this forum who drive backwards and forwards between the UK and CH.
2. You could consider ditching your possessions (selling or giving them away) in the UK, and buying new (or second-hand... there are many excellent charity shops here, not just for clothing but for all sorts of household dadgets and more) once you're here.
3. You could pack, in your luggage and hand-luggage, the heaviest items, and post the rest.
4. See the suggestion of Wolli, from post 7 onwards in this thread by someone else who is on her way over here, asking for similar advice: moving companies from NZ to CH?

You could fly here, register in Zurich, living in a B&B, get your US driving license exchanged for a Swiss license. Then hire a van in Germany, drive to London, and bring your stuff here.

We used Luker Brothers.... We transported 15 145L boxes for around 500ch including all import duty sorting out! really professional and efficient.

4 bikes might be expensive as they take up room.

suggest you send a pm to grey1234, see thread

Handy Man with a Van in the A3 Corridor

Maybe worth considering Easyjet to Basel from either Luton or Gatwick, to add a bicycle is it extra £60, though only one per flight per passenger and 3 x 20kgs of hold luggage at £25 each

I used 3 years ago service of 'Man with Van' from Brighton. The guy decided to use Renault Espace + Trailer (a Big one) instead of actual Van and in that smart move save a lot on costs. I was the 'second' hands and of course was travelling with him saving few quid on flight (for that we paid for ferry and Swiss motorway fee). Total costs of 999 £.
There are always alternative ways. And alternative guys.
Good luck with your journey.

Re: Moving from London to Zurich - moving estimates are too expensive! Alternatives

If you don't move a whole household (big furniture and stuff!), simply pack the boxes yourself and ask transport companies, not movers!

A mover will always demand a premium price, if you can do the packaging yourself or simply hire a temp-help for this, you can save heaps...

And once they give you an offer, check which ones mention that you need a form "18.44" (form for duty/vat free import of removals in Switzerland) - then you have found someone that knows what he's doing..

If one does it by car, is there any form to fill in? Or one can just drive through the borders, no questions ask?

If you are moving here permanently, importing your household & car using Swiss form 18.44, then there are no customs fees or tax to pay. But you need the form 18.44 and the Swiss residence Permit.

Thanks for the tip - I didn't even think of riding with the person on the 10 hr drive to Zurich - not sure I would want to do this.... I was planning on flying anyway and not sure of the safety and comfort of the journey!

I don't have many boxes - I estimate most of my stuff will fit in a smaller transit van - hopefully it'll be a lot cheaper than £999! Shipping will be only £600 or so. I'll give them a ring. thanks!

£1000.-- for at least a 1'000km trip ????

It's not going to get too much cheaper ! Cost of fuel, highway tolls, time, ferry boat crossing, amortisation/depreciation/wear & tear on the van.....

Re: Moving from London to Zurich - moving estimates are too expensive! Alternatives

You could try Pearsons, inquire about kerb-to-kerb service. This is most basic offer where you pack, possibly help load, and unload boxes on delivery.

I dealt with a very nice and helpful person last summer - if I can track down the communications from the dark chambers of ancient email, I will repost with his name.

Re: Moving from London to Zurich - moving estimates are too expensive! Alternatives

I second Luker Bros recommendation.
They are a bit less flexible than other companies (pickup/delivery have to be on designated dates) because they run a scheduled van service, but they are one of the cheapest precisely for the same reason.

As a guidance, we recently moved 8 cubic meters of boxes (contents of a 2bed flat without the furniture) from London to Zurich for ~1300 GBP (do not remember the exact figure).

With today's SNB move, your costs of moving to Switzerland have just gone up!

But fear not! Assuming you will be getting paid in CHF you'll be reet!
