Housing in Lugano

Hello all,

I will be moving to Lugano from UK for my new employment. I wanted to know about finding a house / flat in Lugano.

(1) Is it recommended to rent a flat through an agency before I reach there or take a temporary accommodation for 1 month, view properties and then rent one.

(2) Any recommended rental agencies specifically for properties in Lugano.

(3) Also, can someone suggest few places for short term rentals.

(4) Is the 3 month rent deposit + 1 month rent should be paid in advance or is it negotiable. I cannot pay 4 months rent at one go.

Thanks,
Kris

Re: Housing in Lugano

Most would say temporary until you have time to look around.

If you don't have around 5000 cash I would look at arranging an overdraft before you come.

Switzerland is an expensive country, you will need cash to get set-up here.

If you don't have enought money look at flat share until you save some money.

Re: Housing in Lugano

I would recommend temporary and then look while you are here. It's pretty easy and plenty of places available. So I would say an agency is not needed unless you are happy paying more to make life easy..

I stayed in a place called 'Centro Cristiano'. It's wasn't great but did the job and was fairly cheap.

The 3 months deposit seems to be standard here. Can't see too many landlords being happy to waive it. But you can try.

Good luck

Welcome! I think I was very lucky finding my flat here so don't have any advice on your questions, but feel free to message me if there's anything else I can help with, if you're looking for stuff to do here (I'm looking for running/climbing buddies myself!), etc.

Re: Housing in Lugano

Hi krishmani02,

I also used Centro Cristiano as Scottie_CH; I found it great as a landing spot in Switzerland. They're cheap and flexible, and Breganzona is a short distance from Lugano, the main station is 10 minutes walking distance. Rents there are at their lowest in winter, you pay more in Summer and availability is lower. The only downside is the furniture feels like it's been there since the seventies.

Once you've found your feet, if you need to save some CHFs, you might consider living over the border in Italy for 6 months. It's even cheaper now the CHF / EUR peg has ended and can help build up capital quickly, plus you're probably not obliged to pay CH health insurance. There are many commuters at peak hours to / from Italy, so traffic is horrendous, but there is a train line from Chiasso and a 'trenino' from Ponte Tresa (both around 20-25 minutes from Lugano) so you don't have to suffer the traffic if you don't need a car.

Good luck!

Re: Housing in Lugano

Thanks Scottish_CH and waterpau.

I will enquire Centro Cristiano for a temporary accommodation while I search and find a suitable flat.

Staying in Italy and commuting to Lugano might not work for me based on my work/residence permit. I'm non-EU and hence might get a L/B permit and I'm not sure if I can stay in Italian borders and travel to Lugano on a daily basis.

Cheers,
Kris
