Relocation to CH from UK. Need advice.

Hello,

I will be soon relocating to CH from UK for a new job. I have basic household items to shift, couple of suitcases with clothes, few boxes of daily usage items, kitchen stuff etc. I do not want to get any furniture and plan to buy after I move there. Also the company provides relocation support where I can claim expenses on relocation till a certain amount.

- Can someone suggest if I should shift these items using a professional relocation company or just pack my stuff into boxes and use a courier service like DHL, Fedex.

- If I plan to opt for relocation company service, can I buy cheap furniture in UK and get them transported instead of buying in CH (may be cheaper and I can get the basic furniture in place soon in an unfurnished flat rather than spending lot of time to buy new ones in CH).

- I have few essential food items that I should get from UK as I'm sure that I cannot find them in CH. Are packed food items allowed through customs while entering CH.

It would be great if someone could provide their inputs here.

Cheers,
Kris

Re: Relocation to CH from UK. Need advice.

There are plenty of threads here already on moving here. The easiest is probably to get a van in the UK and drive here. Importing stuff is also covered on the Forum.

We cannot decide for you. Maybe read this book to avoid major problems?

Use whatever relocation services your company offers. Mine was done through a reloaction company called Packimpex. They packed up the stuff in UK, made a custom inventory list, transported it, stored in Switzerland for three months ie by the time I had found a permanent lodging. A very easy move. No idea how much it cost though, was sorted through work.

If you buy furniture in the UK. Make sure you unpack it for the move. Officially you can only move items customs free, if you already owned them for 6 months. In reality this just means they should not still have their wrapping on.

There are restrictions on bringing some food items over the border eg 1KG meat per person is the duty free allowance. Not sure if the rules change if it is part of a relocation.

Re: Relocation to CH from UK. Need advice.

Hi we are just in the throes of sorting our move over for the end of this month - next week in fact!!

We already had the apartment with just the minimal essential items, so maybe not the same situation as you We have found using a removal company the best way to go as they do everything for us, packing, inventory, advice etc and as a company move will also be paid for.

We have also decided to source any new items in the UK as we feel this is easier for us. Whilst it would be exciting to go shopping in Switzerland, we have opted for ease, especially as we are not planning to have a car immediately.

There is lots of advice on the forum, which I have taken on and which has helped me to decide what to bring, eg some food items. Basically when our stuff arrives, apart from a few fresh items, we will be completely set up for a couple of weeks until we find our feet.

Hope this helps
