where to buy sheet glass (table top)

Hi Guys,

i've made a DIY table from wood pallets, and plant to put a glass top on it.
I asked the shop keepers in Jumbo if they have such, but they were so surprised and said that I won't be able to find such anywhere in Switzerland (Baumax, or other hobby stores). Might be some restrictions or donno (they are only selling plastic stuff)

Do you have any suggestion where to look around ?
(I would need a 120cmx80cm one)

cheers,
Bela

Re: where to buy sheet glass (table top)

There are plenty of outfits who will cut the right piece of glass for you. Look for Glaserei and be ready to get properly Switzerlanded.

Re: where to buy sheet glass (table top)

It is vital that you buy toughened glass with ground edges for safety. This should also be marked on the glass. Standard glass will not be adequate

Re: where to buy sheet glass (table top)

It is available at a Glaserei. We had a glass cut to size for a wall clock by Glas Trösch in Bützberg. I am sure they would do table tops as well.

But as Deep Purple says, the Glaserei will then have to send it away to have the edges polished and the glass toughened (it can't be done by small glass companies). It's not so cheap over here (I used to get this done a lot in the UK for work)

Have a look at glass table tops in IKEA, dirt cheap (but ready to use), but only a couple of standard sizes available.

Do not try to cut glass that has already been toughened though, it's not possible! (it will cut, but not where you want it too)

Check out our beloved Ikea:

I bet you cannot find lower price than this. But the dimensions are a bit off.

We definitely saw it at the Jumbo in Chavannes (they outsource to a different company) - we were looking for the same thing...

Re: where to buy sheet glass (table top)

I'm also surprised that they couldn't supply it in Jumbo.
We got a replacement glass top for a patio table from the Jumbo here in Neuchatel. They have a selection of different sorts of glass to choose from in store and they then order it accirding to your measurements. It takes about 3 weeks to be delivered to the store.
We got the extra thick toughened safety glass and it came will all the cornered neatly rounded off and the edges all smooth. Definitely not cheap though.

Re: where to buy sheet glass (table top)

Don't waste time and money getting from a glassier, if he can't supply proper toughened glass.

I replaced a 60cm circular piece which was screwed through a centre hole to an inverted curved rod.
The local glassier assured me it would be toughened glass, but when he brought it, it was obvious that it wasn't - but as it wasn't expensive, I took it, anyway.

Within a short time it was cracked and then broken - the centre hole being the weak point.

Re: where to buy sheet glass (table top)

Thank you for all the replies guys !

I want exactly the same size, so most of the used/broken tables or IKEA options are out unfortunately.
If the hardened and edge polished are too expensive I'm planning to do a small wooden edge around the table, and put a simple glass sheet in it (similar to a window) and see how will it handle the cracks (has good wooden support from bellow, so weight of items shouldn't be an issue).

Any other comments are welcome

Re: where to buy sheet glass (table top)

Just be very careful with standard window glass. If someone trips and falls on it there will be a bloody mess. With toughened glass, although it might break with a heavy blow, it breaks with smooth edges.

Everyone seems to think Jumbo can order it in for you toughened with polished edges, I'm sure that can't be more hassle than making a wooden frame. Just check your local DIY store again to be sure

Re: where to buy sheet glass (table top)

I just got back from my local Jumbo (Crissier) and I took a couple of photos of their glass ordering display. They will definitely have what you need.

Several thicknesses of glass as well as finishes. They offer regular safety glass and safety glass with film in the middle. They can do any sort of shape so a table top (with rounded, polished edges will not be a problem - see designs on photo).

The display will probably be over where they cut wood (at least it was in Crissier).

I guess there's no point in me posting the almost identical photos I took in the Jumbo in Marin just now.
Same location too, at the wood cutting counter.

Re: where to buy sheet glass (table top) - or even windows

I know this is an old thread but was looking for a replacement glass double glazing unit with a hole cut in it for a ventilation in my bathroom and came across this http://vitreenligne.ch/en/ which seem to offer every possible custom glass on-line, useful if you need to fix some broken stuff or damaged bits in your apartment
