Re: housing prices... where are they going?

Thank you very much for this information. We are going to be renting a relative's house to begin with and look around during the next year for ourselves. We were told that since we were retired a mortgage was out of the question. This sounds promising albeit probably not as simple as it may sound.

Re: housing prices... where are they going?

As you are aware, prices vary hugely in CH depending on location- and some areas are in a risk bubble, and others not.

Where are you headed? Have you got an area in mind- and a type of property? Only 15 years ago, only houses were for sale, but now condos are becoming just as popular.

Flats were certainly for sale 20 years ago, curious where your idea comes from. You required a C permit to purchase in most cases.

Re: housing prices... where are they going?

Does anyone know were house prices are going?

Have prices been affected by the high Swiss Franc and mortgages taken out in the former Eastern Bloc?

Re: housing prices... where are they going?

Perhaps in Geneva and Zurich. Where I grew up, nobody owned a flat (apart from the landlords of course). Until very recently, only the rich were house-owners in CH, and owned individual villas built for them on individual architect's plans. Recently many flats previouslay rented are now offered for sale- but it is very much a recent phenomenon.

Here's a quote from the comparis property report, apparently there are less signs of bubble and less bubble-risky areas (one that is... which is questionable of what methodology they use to assess them).

Quote:
The situation on the property market continues to improve. Only one districts still exhibits signs of a real estate bubble, as is shown in the Property Report from ETH Zurich and comparis.ch. The risk of a bubble has receded for now.

There are several good news for those wishing to make their dream of home-ownership come true. Firstly, mortgage rates continue to drop rapidly after the Swiss National Bank's recent decisions and are lower than ever.
Secondly, the fifth edition of the Property Report, which has just been released by ETH Zurich and comparis.ch, reveals that the risk of a real estate bubble has receded noticeably. However, potential buyers should be aware that Switzerland is facing considerable uncertainties now that the minimum exchange rate for the Swiss franc against the euro has been discontinued, and the risk of a bubble may increase again.
