What was the complaint about? Did they have a point? Because the just might, you know
It's a spinster with no life issue.

Re: Are Neighbours Really that bad?

We found a house to rent in Klein Basel. This neighborhood is filled with children, which is great for us and our young kids.

Read my previous post about my former neighbors...however, it's been revealed that an older couple a few doors down has complained to our other neighbor about their kids being too loud outside this past Saturday at 6pm.

As it's not neighborly to tell them to fu*k themselves, I suggested to invite them over and introduce the kids. Maybe they'll find it easier to be more patient once they know who's on the other side of the bushes.

Try to be patient while house hunting to give yourself enough time to find the "right" place here. The housing market is tight.

Could anyone recommend a family friendly neighbourhood around Basel?[/QUOTE]

Re: Are Neighbours Really that bad?

6pm on Saturday is not "Nachtruhe". They can complain all they like but they are in the wrong. Don't do the submissive bit with such people - give them an inch and they will take a yard.

Cheers,
Nick

Re: Are Neighbours Really that bad?

My neighbours are great! We are 6 apartments and 4 are Swiss!
We always say ''Hello'' to each other and stop for chit chat.
Once, when I forgot my clothes in the drying room, my neighbour (the one that had to wash that day) folded them nicely and put them on the table in the drying room.
And I can even ask to switch the washing days sometimes (when we go on holidays).
One of my neighbours has 2 cats and when she goes on holidays she asks me to check up on them.
Though all of the Swiss neighbours speak Swiss German to me and I answer in High German and sometimes this is confusing for me because I can not understand every word they say but I get the point.
I guess I am one lucky bunny.

Re: Are Neighbours Really that bad?

Evenin' all,

I performed a "noise" search in the "housing in general" forum and found this thread. I would have posted a new thread but could not see how. So I've hijacked this one.

I hope that someone can advise me regarding my neighbours who are complaining about the noise I apparently make in my apartment.

I've been here a year, no complaints, then this week the couple below me have complained twice. The lady, at 10:10pm, earlier this week saying the telly was too loud. BBC documentary on Japanese wildlife and it was on low and I was watching sea snakes go about their business. Sea snakes are not noisy.

Then this evening her husband came up. Very polite but said his wife was pregnant and a light sleeper and hears everything, the shower, the toilet etc and it wakes her up. He hears nothing though. He told me that according to the landlord rules I can make no noise after 10pm.

Apparently she heard a bang at 2am last night. I've no idea what it was and he couldn't say. I was asleep and can't comment but apparently it came from my apartment.

So now I am on tenterhooks. I'm walking on tippy toe, I shudder when I empty the dishwasher and put cutlery away. Last thing I want to do is upset my neighbours and I have never done so in 10 years of living here in Switzerland.

Being ever resourceful and after kneejerk contemplating that I may have to move I downloaded a decibel app from Google to evaluate my noise output. I make about 50-55 decibels with the telly on.

So, to my questions. Are there any hard and fast rules regarding the volume of noise you may make after 10pm? May I flush the loo, shower before bedtime, accidently drop a spoon or practice my Riverdance routines?

My Swiss friends tell me to ignore them and if they persist escalate to the landlord. But if they ring the doorbell at 10:10 I can't ignore it, it is confrontational and if I'm honest upsetting. I'm English btw, which may go some way to explaining my dilemma.

All advice will be taken on board but not necessarily followed

Steve

Re: Are Neighbours Really that bad?

You could buy tv headphones if you want to. But I agree, you'll have to put up with a baby screaming soon & if she can't sleep now, she's going to have a hell of a time once it is there. Can you put some rugs down?
You can do your Riverdancing between 8am & 10pm. She's also going to be complaining though when the baby wants to sleep & they don't have timer switches.

Re: Are Neighbours Really that bad?

I would advice to go to police and simply ask them what to do in this case. There is a difference between being a bad neighbor and breaking the law. For example, what happens if they complain about noise from you, but you did nothing. How can you protect yourself from such allegations. I am sure police handles thousands of noise cases, so they should know.
