Moving north: Basel or Zurich as a home?

Let me start off by saying I've lived in Zurich for 10 years but I am somewhat flexible in where I live due to work.

So I'd like to compare Basel and Zurich. Here's my pros and cons:

Zurich: I know it very well; my main office location is there; I have a good bunch of closer friends there; it's a great place

Basel: I don't know it as well but always have a good feeling about it; I like being there; I have a few friends there; it's close to France

I would say I can choose to make Basel or Zurich my home. What would you do? What has a cheaper cost of living in general? Anything else I should think about?

I'm tipping in favour of Zurich because I'm most likely to end up at the pub there with friends and closer distance to get home is OK.

Cheers EF!

I would live wherever you have the shortest commute to work, which seems to be ZH.

Agree. If you would have to commute from Basel to Zürich every day, you waste at least 2 hours of your time every day.

He mentioned he's flexible where to live cause of work. So I guess you travel a bit? Basel has the better football team & u can pop over to France/Germany in a few minutes to make use of the weak Euro .

Basel, trust me ;-)

I suppose it depends on you. For me, Basel is a actually a little more cosmopolitan. Too many snobs in Zurich both in the schicky micky and alternative szenes. Baslers are more low key, live and let live.

Basel has no lake but the river is pretty sweet. Good labour market. I'd recommend Kleinbasel to live, from there you can get a tram to Germany and shopping! Biking around the black forest, Freiburg one hour away. Closer to French speaking switzerland....

i'm sure i've posted about this before. Sorry to loose you from Ticino, but it's good to change once in a while ;-) good luck!

I wouldn't worry about that. As I live in Zürich I tend to bring the average down quite a bit

Mr Connery, personally I'd relocate to where my place of work is. I can understand Basel being attractive, but I'd get very tired of the commute very quickly and that for me would outweigh any potential advantages of Basel.

Re: Moving north: Basel or Zurich as a home?

I work in Zug and lived in Basel for a few years. For some reason I clung on to Basel, it's what the Swiss called sympatisch. It's a different town, with the mighty Rhine that flows through it, a sub-cultural clique, culture 3-ways, a university and students. It's small with a provincial feeling but it has an energy about, one of creativity and positivity.

I also spent a few years living in Zurich.

Basel doesn't have the flash, Baslers are more discreet. Money doesn't drive around in a flashy Ferrari or Lamborghini. I know of super-wealthy people who still ferry their children around in a Renault Espace.

The commute is what ended it for me. I just couldn't waste the time and energy anymore. For all the space I had in my Gundeli loft apartment, I was always too tired to enjoy it or to make the most of living in Basel. I did go to all my art galleries and museums, the kunst museum, the Beyeler and Vitra museum are some of my favourite places, but I never really had the inclination to integrate with the night-life. I love Jazz and there is a lot of really funky stuff happening in Basel, but once again I was always too tired.

My health went downhill, my mental health went downhill. I suffered for years with health problems and the minute I moved and won back the time and stopped the stressful commute, the sun came out in my life and I found new energy and renewed well-being.

Also, it's a grubby town. Baustelle Basel. I could never finds parking for the car, the streets were always being ripped up, the place was messy and often chaotic, which although I often like, I could never understand where my comparatively high tax was going.

I put my fears to rest and moved to the corner of a field somewhere in Canton Zug. I have a thriving social life, a 15 minute commute to work, nearly 4 extra hours a day for me, that's a full time hobby and I make use of that time. I am happier, healthier and wealthier on account of the tax. I nearly fell about laughing when I got my tax bill from Zug.

Basel rent is cheaper, you can shop in France or Germany, it never really made it cheaper for me because of the type of food I buy but France and Germany at least gave me a greater selection. Everything else was more expensive though, tax, health insurance etc. I have far more cash now. All things considered, Basel was more expensive.

As the others have said, move closer to work. It's about the time and the energy. What difference does it make where you live if you don't have time to enjoy it?

I was worried about moving to what I call Volg Country, but I lucked out. I have more friends than ever, a busier social life and a wonderful and friendly community around me.

Good luck with your decision.

Agree with this. After 3 years of a 3 hour commute from ZH to BS, I would just sit in my tiny expensive ZH flat as I was too tired to do anything else. I moved to BS 2 months ago.

If I free to relocate my office, I would probably move back to Schaffhausen. It felt more like home than anywhere else I've been in Switzerland.

Re: Moving north: Basel or Zurich as a home?

Lived in both, given the choice, I'd go for Zurich.

I got used to Basel with time, but still find it a bit bland. Zurich's not exactly NYC either, but at least a tiny bit more exciting. And it's got the lake - and no, the Rhein really can't compare. Admittedly, people in Basel are friendlier, generally speaking (as always, plent of exceptions).

Regardless, while I am still spending a lot of time in Zurich, it's much less than it used to be and frankly: I miss it.

Cost of living is about the same. Rent used to be considerably cheaper in Basel until a few years ago - since then, they've been converging, though Zurich is still more expensive. As far as looking for an apartment goes, I heard from several people in Basel that they had to hand in actual application dossiers (written reference letters and all incl a letter of motivation - not kidding) and competing with a 100+ other applicants (thankfully, I haven't had to look for an apartment in a while), so all in all: not better than Zurich. Taxes and especially health insurance are substantially higher in Basel. Rest is the same as everywhere.

Also let me tell you that I live on the border to Germany, literally, and don't go shopping there more than a handful of times a year (last time I went was in early January, for instance). So just because Germany (and France) are "right there" doesn't mean you actually make use of it. I know hardly anyone in Basel who shops across the border on a regular basis - every now and then, yes, but not regularly.

I would never move back to Zurich if I still had to face the commute to Basel, though (did that for a long time). But again, if I could work wherever I wanted in Switzerland, I'd go for Zurich.

So does Norwich in England, but that doesn't mean I'll move back and commute - which is theoretically doable, but would suck up 8-10 hours of my day.

We need Star Trek transporters, and we need them now.

Rent a room in Zurich, and return to Ticino on the weekends.
