Re: 14 sqm meters for Russian wife and me

You mean, if two people live in an apartment instead of one, you might pay more?
That's entirely left to the landlord, AFAIK.

Usually, the Migrationsamt only gives out general, non-binding answers per phone.

If you are unsure, you can always hire a lawyer. At least, he works for you. Unlike the Migrationsamt, which usually works for the Kanton.

I've not dealt with them personally in such a matter, but if they're like any Amt: they hate it when somebody is trying to bend their rules or game the system.

I wouldn't take any chances with this one - fighting the Migrationsamt is very costly. Both in time and money.

Try to find some 3 room apartment and move in there.
You can always sub-let it later ;-)

You say you have an above average salary can afford to get a normal 2 room apartment which CH wouldn't even cost so much for you move to the outer parts of zurich, and yet want your marriage to start with living in a 14m2 apartment? Do you not even want to go eat your wife some basic dignity and quality of life?

The mind boggles.
It's not an apt., it's a room!....with a shared bathroom outside of that room. For someone with an above average salary...

And they wonder why marriages don't last.

Indeed that size is not going to endear you to this new wife. I know at least one wife who would have said 'I don't' if faced with this 'offer'....

Re: 14 sqm meters for Russian wife and me

Further down in that link (page 31) it says:

Für ein Ehepaar ohne Kinder genügt im Kanton St. Gallen, Zürich, Genf oder Glarus eine 1-Zimmer-Wohnung. Basel-Landschaft und Solothurn verlangen zwei Zimmer, das Tessin eine 2-Zimmer-Wohnung mit mindestens 50 m2 Wohnfläche.

Google translation:
For a married couple without children is sufficient in Canton St. Gallen, Zurich, Geneva and Glarus a 1-room apartment. Basel-Country and Solothurn require two rooms, Ticino a 2-bedroom apartment with at least 50 m2 of living space.

So it sounds as if a studio would be acceptable for a couple in Zurich. However, Maxii I don't think what you have at the moment would qualify as a studio as these include a kitchen/cooking area and bathroom altogether in the one unit.

If he had no choice, and was under some special circumstances....but planned to get out of there as soon as possible, would be another thing! But otherwise...it's just...oh well, each to their own.

I guess I will just call the municipalities and ask them directly. Probably I should call the Migrationsamt or who is giving out family reunion permits?
Quote:

Never do this in the first place.
First ask here and get an insight on the legal apects, then you decide.
While I agree that asking here never hurts, the final decision rests with the municipality (and the landlord). There are ways of asking questions such that you don't sound like you're out to cause trouble.

OP's profile says he's in ZH. I assume all the Kreisburos have the same rules since it's the same city, so if you're really concerned just call a different office from the one you deal with now.

I'd keep the info minimal - Tell them you'd like to bring your wife over under family reunification, and ask them how large of a flat you'd need. If they ask, just say you're in a shared flat right now and you want to make sure everything is in order so there are no permit delays or issues.

If you find out a studio is sufficient, just make sure any potential landlord accepts two people to live there. I think a studio for two would be far too cozy and would prefer at least a one bedroom myself. But some people can take more frugality than others.

Good luck, OP. Let us know how it turns out.

Re: 14 sqm meters for Russian wife and me

I was living in a similar situation (room was about 10m^2, and bathroom and kitchen was shared with ~20). The rental contract specifically read that only one person was allowed to be in the room. I could have easily lived with a SO in that space, but of course, this is Zurich, an I could never find a SO knowing that I'm living there :P

What's wrong with that?

I did the same for four years in Zurich, two of them married.

I paid CHF 250/month (originally 200, but they raised the rent after a while).

But my wife also had a room, in the center of town, so we had a town room, and a country room!

I imagine you will not be popular with your neighbors with whom you share the toilet and bath room if you bring you girlfriend to live there. Nobody likes queuing for their own toilet.

As far as I know, a couple can live in a studio kind of apartment. I know many couples who started their stay in Zurich in 1 room business apartment/studios. Shouldn't be an issue. But check with the landlord first.

I have friends who have a one room apartment near Kreuzplatz and have officially lived there off an on over the years (they have a house in Ticino as well), in fact it is their official residence at the moment.

Spent last weekend there with my wife.

However, it does have a toilet/shower (but no kitchen).

I don't think the rent will have risen very much as the interest rate would have been nearer 4%. My rent stayed the same in ZH for more than 15 years, I never asked for a reduction.

Sure. Whatever. People want to live how they want to live. Maybe they would both be happy in a 14m2 room with shared bathroom and no kitchen. I wouldn't.... But I don't have to be.

The issue for the OP is what the authorities are going to think of this set up for him and his wife. Personally, I'm not sure it's going to fly with them. But I guess a small cheap studio would work, if the rules of number of people minus one are all they take into account.

I didn't have to be either, I CHOSE to be.

No kitchen needed (and no fridge, either), amazing what one can cook with only a raclette grill.

Re: 14 sqm meters for Russian wife and me

I just called the Migrationsamt and described the situation (couple sharing bathroom and kitchen with others, just one room for both of them etc.). They said as long as the landlord is okay with my living situation they do not care.

They also confirmed that in Zurich there is no minimum requirement for square meters (while there are requirements in other cantons..).

The laws about reasonable living conditions stem from the 60s when Italian workers came to Switzerland and were forced to live in unthinkable living conditions (10 people in a room in a run-down house etc.). In order to protect these people, Switzerland decided to make laws for "reasonable" living standards which differ a lot between cantons.
