Notary act reading...someone shoot me now!

Deed done! Finally bought a flat in the village we love.

However, sitting through the reading aloud of the notary act for over 1 hour, then the "Acte hypothecaire" for another 20 minutes was absolute torture!
Despite the hot and stuffy room, not even a glass of water offered...after the outrageous fees they charge!

Thank god we had plenty to drink ourselves afterwards!

Re: Notary act reading...someone shoot me now!

Wow, I think you were unlucky.

Ours sent us the documents beforehand, and on the day just read a couple of important bits about the hypothek, did some spot checks to make sure we'd actually read it, and bingo.

Or maybe we were really lucky...

ps Congratulations

Re: Notary act reading...someone shoot me now!

Maybe we were unlucky. We did get the documents beforehand so had time to figure out what it all meant.
He probably thought we were ignorant because we had to ask what "une cédule hypothécaire" was, or perhaps he did not like the fact that we pointed out 2 or 3 spelling mistakes and insisted that "Britannique" required 2 "n", against the opinion of his clerk who kept typing it with just the one!

Bloody foreigners telling us how to spell and add up (he was dealing with a teacher and an accountant!)

Hey- it is excruciating, so I feel for you, and my MT is French. But it's all over now, so enjoy that bottle of bubbly and your great new flat. Hurrah Not that long ago, you were worrying yourself silly about your psycho neighbour- onwards and forwards.

About half an hour here which was amazing really as our builder liked to talk.

Informal conversation afterwards lasted much longer but thankfully we wern't paying for that.

Doubt it, the notary has also been my wife's lawyer for the past 18 years, and we know him well (he's even one of my Facebook friends, as is his secretary ).

I know! Seems a lifetime away! He is still locked up somewhere in Neuchâtel.

We are staying in the same village that we love, and this was what mattered to us, even if we'll be eating potatoes and bread for the next 99 years!
