Re: Curtains- where to buy?

Yes the pleats appear to be the problem. I have just had some made for our place in London and they look so much better though.....
We are having the rails built into the ceiling so need to have curtains with hooks, not the tab type. ?I'll have a look at the IKEA ones. We will have very big windows so I doubt off the shelf will work... but maybe you are right and sewing them together is the way forward.

I live in Spreitenbach so Baden is very close. If your client has a contact i would be grateful for the details.

I am planning a trip to China so am also thinking about having them made there and shipped over as a last resort.

Acually I did not see many curtains really suited to pinch pleats in Germany. They seem to have tab tops. You really need to have them made or find a curtain which is suited to pinch pleats. If you do not want something really sheer, at Ikea the "Vivan" series is ideally suited for pleat hooks. I know this as I bought some and I wasn't intended on having pleats!

Here is the link, you can see the pleat hooks in the second photo.

The hooks are called "Riktig"

As the shrinkage on the Ikea curtains is 4% I would wash everything before hemming. You can also sew panels together if you have very wide windows.

Edit: if you opt for pleat hooks, be sure to buy the gliders for the curtain rails with the hook running in the same direction as the rail. They are marked on the package with B3. At Ikea they mix them in the bins and it is very easy to buy the wrong ones.

I just saw you are in Aargau. Whereabouts? I had a client with a rental property near Brugg who had drapes custom made by a woman near Baden. She did a brilliant job.

Re: Curtains- where to buy?

If you like designer and natural fabrics the place to go in Zürich is

http://www.lestissuscolbert-zh.ch

Ask for Stephanie ( speaks English) and pretend to need a whole house redecorated. Then, she'll pay attention to you.

Remember to give her my regards.

Though, be warned, the prices are high. However, certainly more the standard of what you might find in London.

Don't forget...my kind regards...

Thanks for the warning.

To be fair they are not cheap in London if you buy good quality and have them custom made.....

I'm just trying to decide if getting them made in china and having them shipped is worth the effort.....

Re: Curtains- where to buy?

I just wanted to update this thread as I found a good selection of curtains in Dogern just over the border in Germany. http://www.moebelmarkt-dogern.de/

The decorative curtains weren't as exciting as I would like but they are OK.

To give an idea of cost I got a quote for 'voile' curtains for a whole house.
2 large patio windows in living 8m and dining 6m, another patio window 8m and 3x bedroom windows at approx 35 m each.
In the living and dining room I will also have more substantial/decorative curtains and in the bedrooms there will also be 'blackout' curtains and the cost will be approx 8K euro.
I didn't choose the cheapest options and my windows are much bigger tahn standard with the living room and dining room floor to ceiling measuring 2.4m
I could only get a 'ish' cost as until my ceilings have been finished I couldn't give an accurate measure. They suggested I get a piece of the track I will use and they will attach the appropriate hooks so the curtain skims the ceiling. I will be ordering in the new year and they won't be installed until March/April, but I can give an update then if anyone is interested.

Re: Curtains- where to buy?

Susan, do you know if Les Tissus Colbert sells the fabric alone, or must one use their design service as well?

You mention to expect sticker shock - noted. But any idea of the general fabric-only price per meter?

I can make my own curtains, and enjoy doing so. What I have not found here are decent natural fabrics in my color scheme. So before I trek into the city (something I absolutely loathe doing ) need to decide if what Les Tissus Colbert offers might meet what I am looking for...
