Curtains- where to buy?

I have had a quick search but wanted up to date experiences folks.

I have to, buy or make curtains for our house and wanted recommendations of which places have best service choice etc?

I am happy to have them made but would also have a go myself, where is good to buy the fabric and accessories? I will be based around Bern .

Re: Curtains- where to buy?

Sorry I can't help on where to buy curtains or fabric, but I just wanted to say - wait to buy anything until you've got actual measurements and see what kind of curtain tracks (if any) you have. Ceiling heights are not standard here, so what might work in one place won't work in another. I bought all my curtains in the U.S. for next-to-nothing and then had my wonderful mother hem them to the right length.

I second that, as curtains can be horrendous expensive in Switzerland.

The fittings will be different to what you know.

No idea if you are speaking about the heavy curtains, &/or the first nets/blinds.

i do not know Bern, but many parts of Switzerland have either the shutters that close or the roller blinds that close from the outside of the buildings.

if you need something in between, then might be worth searching the Broki, BrokenHaus if on a budget.

Actually I think Ikea is not always the best option. Their curtains are 3 metres long so you are immediately going to need to hem them unless you have very high ceilings.

Many of the Ikea curtains are not suited to the standard curtain tracks, but rather poles. Some of the curtains do not work with basic curtain hooks, but only pleating hooks or the hooks for tab tops. These are more expensive than standard hooks. Some of the curtains have the band for basic hooks but then it is the band which gathers, rather than pleats.

If you are just trying to cover the windows inside, you may also want to consider blinds. These can often be installed without drilling. That is what I have done in the past.

For curtains there are many stores where you might find what you want so just keep an open mind and your window measurements on hand at all times.

This is purely a matter of personal taste... but I have had difficulty finding the kind of home decor fabrics that I like here. I prefer all natural fabrics and my color palette seems to be at odds with what is 'im Trend'.

If you are planning on white/ivory or sheers you shouldn't have trouble finding fabric (although natural fiber sheers might mean a hunt) but if you are thinking of prints or colors - again personal taste dependent - you might run into the kind of difficulties I have.

Have you found a flat? If so, and if you know what type/size windows you will have you might consider bringing fabric with you.

But perhaps consider wood blinds - these are often less expensive than custom made curtains. Especially when you consider the cost of cleaning your curtains. Washing machines are often small here - heavy curtains might need commercial cleaning, meaning you practically buy the curtains all over again each year.

Good luck!

I would suggest trying in France or Germany. Better prices and better variety.

I have bought quite a lot of curtains in Germany. Living minutes from the border it is easy for me to do so. Best to keep in mind that the fitted curtain tracks which you insert hooks into in Germany are not the same size as the Swiss ones so you need to buy the hooks in Switzerland.

Could you please write the names of the stores in Germany which sell curtains?
I have also been looking for curtains for some time, and live not far from the border.

Not to answer your question directly, but I was in my local Aldi, yesterday, and one of their previous offers (still available, on display), was everything you needed to install curtains ..... rails, fittings, and a variety of pre-made curtains.

This isn't a regularly stocked line, so individual store availability may vary.

Re: Curtains- where to buy?

I Saw said offer at Aldi and bought the thin net type version for the bargain price of 14:99 a pair - 3 pairs for various windows which may do more by the time I shorten them .
I visited a shop nearby called Lipo and found some curtains suitable for the dining room reduced to 14:99 a pair, 2 pairs cover the window nicely and I can add lining later.
Best bargain was a cafe curtain for the kitchen only 1:99 and a rug for my sins room for 29 reduced from 99.
I will be spending the rest of the weekend altering them all but hey you gotta love a bargain!
Next mission to source some linings on EBay ..

Re: Curtains- where to buy?

Curtains are expensive here...
The normal cost of work per meter (width-wise) is around 50-60 sfr.

Depends on the fixtures you have, sizes etc. etc.... but I'd have a look at ready-made curtains in Interio, Manor or Micasa. Kind of a medium level quality & price

Re: Curtains- where to buy?

I bought mine at Creasphere in Waedenswil, I believe they have a couple of stores all around CH where you can go and pick (and, in my case, ask for help on different solutions), they also have online store, but I found the in-store collection of fabrics much larger. Prices are quite reasonable and the staff are very knowledgeable.

Mrs Doolittle, where in Germany did you find curtains? can you recommend anywhere ?

I need curtains for a new house we are building - nothing standard sized.
I want good quality with pinch pleats.
I also want to get voile curtains made with pinch pleats.... it appears no one in Switzerland does this when I have looked... I have about a month before I go to China where I can get them made and shipped, but I'd rather get them here and have them fitted.
If anyone else has any recommendations I'd appreciate it.

Acually I did not see many curtains really suited to pinch pleats in Germany. They seem to have tab tops. You really need to have them made or find a curtain which is suited to pinch pleats. If you do not want something really sheer, at Ikea the "Vivan" series is ideally suited for pleat hooks. I know this as I bought some and I wasn't intended on having pleats!

Here is the link, you can see the pleat hooks in the second photo.
http://www.ikea.com/ch/de/catalog/products/20297571/

The hooks are called "Riktig"
http://www.ikea.com/ch/de/catalog/products/40212203/

As the shrinkage on the Ikea curtains is 4% I would wash everything before hemming. You can also sew panels together if you have very wide windows.

Edit: if you opt for pleat hooks, be sure to buy the gliders for the curtain rails with the hook running in the same direction as the rail. They are marked on the package with B3. At Ikea they mix them in the bins and it is very easy to buy the wrong ones.

I just saw you are in Aargau. Whereabouts? I had a client with a rental property near Brugg who had drapes custom made by a woman near Baden. She did a brilliant job.
