Dangerous neighborhoods in Basel

Hi!

I am planning to move to Basel from 1st Sept. I got my PhD and I am looking for the apartment. I found an announcement at comparis of really decent, 75m2 apartment for 800 CHF. It is located at Klybeckstrasse. The price seems weirdly low too me. What are your thoughts? Is it scam? Or perhaps the area is quite dangerous? Are there any areas in Basel you wouldn't recommend to live in?

Thanks!

Re: Dangerous neighborhoods in Basel

This is Switzerland. Crime is illegal here. There are no dangerous neighbourhoods in Basel!

However, there are also no apartments to rent at CHF 10/sq. m. I'd suggest that there's some sort of scam going on.

Re: Dangerous neighborhoods in Basel

Agree with 20-ish metres. Nowhere in Basel is unsafe. Kleinbasel is typically a bit cheaper as architecturally a lot of it is naff.

However, 800Fr for a decent 75sqm apartment is low so it does seem scammy. Post a link to the advert. Klybeckstrasse can be pretty noisy and you might be above a smelly restaurant or something, but even so.

Re: Dangerous neighborhoods in Basel

There have been a lot of scams on Homegate lately, they even issued a warning about it. I would tread carefully. Just don't send anyone any money. That's not how it works here when it's legitimate.

Photos look ok, but "two large terraces overlooking the rhine" - not a chance.

The email addresses on the photos are a dead giveaway... some sort of Western Union type scam

Castro, out of interest why are the email addresses on the photos a dead giveaway - would that also apply to any other articles for sale??

Re: Dangerous neighborhoods in Basel

The German isn't polished enough for an ad, either. I think a honest foreigner who'd want to rent their place out would make an effort to write better German, get a friend to help translate or whatnot. E.g. "translation entfernt"...???

Also, compared to how much other flat owners in that building apparently pay (you can find this out by clicking on the corresponding link) this flat is way too cheap. Stay away.

9/10 when the email is in the photo it is a scam. Certainly for cars also. Specially the ones gmx. I have seen those in the US many times also

Move on a find a real place.

Re: Dangerous neighborhoods in Basel

It's already been removed from immoscout, but comparison hasn't updated.

Wonder why they don't advertise at 1800. They'd more likely get responses and potentially more money, though I suppose if you make it an obvious scam, anyone responding has shown they're a bit gullible.

Maybe in their country, 1800 seems such a fantasy rent that they couldn't believe it would get responses?

They want stupid people to apply - easier to scam. And yes, there's a lot of this about.

Yep that is exactly it - that's why the Nigerian Prince scam emails are so over the top, for example. There's a study from Microsoft researchers about it.

Re: Dangerous neighborhoods in Basel

We used to live in Claraplatz. Apart from the occasional mortar shell landing on the balcony and the weekly drive-by shootings it was a perfect place to live. If you want perfect tranquility I can recommend Bärschwil - a favourite for those wishing to study the effects of a closed gene pool.

Re: Dangerous neighborhoods in Basel

As ad-screener for ebay, my alarm bells went off when I read the ad, had it been us I would have toyed with this for a moment or two before deleting it and blocking the poster.
