Wow! What a butthurt have I generated! Anyway the answer is provided (thanks again), you can stop spaming now.
Follow what people further down (quoted posts) and I in my first post in this thread say and you will be fine. Continue bitching like this and people mightn't be quite as inclined to help you next time. Just a little hint.

You have no chance of cancelling the contract early because you are leaving the canton, even leaving the country or dying doesn't get you out of a rental contract.

Hand your notice in now for the earliest possible time that you can cancel as per your contract, then you'll have to keep on paying unless you can find a new tenant to take over from you.

I would check with the Mieterverband (Mieterverband.ch), which specialises in landlord-tenant relationships. They can advise you on what your rights are. You'll have to join the Mieterverband, but it is money well spent as they generally have English-speaking experts who can help you out. We've used them in the past and it was money well spent with excellent results. Bit of a conundrum about not being able to rent another apartment, but the Mieterverband can advise you on this as well.
Thanks TMH and IM for also pointing out what OP should be doing to go down the correct path.

Re: Change cantons. Cancel rental contract on short notice?

Here's a fun way to summerize the OP initial post:
"Hello all, I plan to completely ignore any and all legal responsibilities associated with my current singed and committed contract while all the while claiming a technicality. You know, cause I don't "really live there."

Is that okay with everyone? Just wanted to get your advice before I abscond with all my crap leaving the owner wondering what happened."

Now, at the OP, before you grone at me, just remember: we're not laughing "at" you, were just laughing (at something that you happen to have written). See the difference?

Okay... Now go ahead and GRONE away. God knows my rep deserves it.
