Apartment Application Question

Hi everybody,

I live in Bern at the moment and plan to move to Lausanne, but I'm having a hard time finding a flat. When we go to open houses there are usually 10-20 other people leaving their dossiers.

My question is what is the best way to get our dossier to stand out. Do agencies wait until they get all the dossiers before they make a decision? Is it common practice to submit an application/dossier before the open house? Is it better to go to the agency in person to leave the application/dossier?

I think that finding a flat in Switzerland is one of the most challenging things, almost as hard as finding a job.

Thanks in advance.

This is absolutely, positively normal for apartment hunting in Lausanne, so it can take quite a while to find a place. There's a thread around here about what to include in a dossier, but my successful application probably hinged on the fact that I chatted the landlady up about what kind of lifestyle I expected (quiet, away traveling some, friendly with the neighbors) and that I had a letter of recommendation from my employer.

Needless to say that if you are OK about taking an overly expensive apartment... Most agencies have that type of housing that doesn't shift
