Best place to live between Geneva and Neuchatel?

My girlfriend and I have an apartment in Neuchatel and she's working here but I've found a job in Geneva. Looking for advice/suggestions as to where we should be looking for an apartment.

Yes, yes, I fully appreciate that it's a bit like how long is a piece of string, but there's so many villages between here and there that I hoped you guys and gals could help with narrowing the search, if only a little.

Some pertinent info:

It doesn't have to be on the direct train line, but less commuting is better than more (we don't have a car but might get one if it greatly increased our options, esp. for Park and Ride).

Small towns are fine, but so are villages: we're very open to anywhere and everywhere. Except for Yverdon les Bains, which has nothing going for it, as far as we're concerned.

Can be in France or Switzerland.

Can be in the mountains, valleys or by the lake.

Any ideas?

Shame you don't like Yverdon- as it would be perfect, really, with direct trains both ways.

I do, actually. Great beach, great access to lake, cycle paths and walks all around lake and great villages like Estavayer, Yvonand, GRandson, good spa, nice old town- and very easy access to mountains at St Croix/Les Rasses and the Jura, good restaurants and shops, short commute to Neuch and Lausanne, and easy to Geneva- much lower rents, why not?

"Much lower rents?" Really? I heard it was much more expensive. We're paying 1550 for a two bedroom apartment in the middle of Neuchatel. What does 1550 get you in YLB?

Incidentally, is Lausanne ridiculously expensive?

Yes, I meant much lower rents than Lausanne and the Riviera, MUCH- and much more availaibility too. Probably quite similar to Neuchâtel for rents and availaibility.

Finding a flat in Lausanne is like a needle in a haystack- and so it is too in smaller villages with easy commute.

Maybe somewhere just outside Nyon or Morges? Both service both Geneva and Neuchatel.

I live in Nyon, but am just about to move to Geneva for personal reasons - I love it here and will be really sad when I go. Always stuff happening and it's amazing being by the lake.

(Actually, if you want to live in Nyon itself, DM me; need to start the search for a new tenant for my place!)

Re: Best place to live between Geneva and Neuchatel?

We live in a small village at the foot of the Jura mountains in the Apples / L'Isle area. We both currently work in Lausanne but my husband's contract will end at the end of next year and he will probably be looking for work elsewhere. We feel reassured that we can fairly easily access all of francophone Switzerland from where we are, by car or transit. There is a small train (the BAM) that goes down to Morges, and a number of buses that link us up to Cossonay and the Lausanne-Yverdon train line. It wouldn't always be an easy commute depending on where you're going (but working in Neuchatel and Geneva at least one of you will end up with a nasty commute), but as a Canadian I am still amazed at how easily accessible our little village is.
