Construction site noise - Mietreduktion [rent reduction]

Since some weeks we have a large construction site close to our building.
The noise will continue for many months. Having windows open is not
enjoyable anymore.

Has anyone of you been successful in paying less rent because of this?

Re: Construction site noise - Mietreduktion

I haven't heard of anyone managing that and I do know people who have suffered construction noise.

The typical attitude is that the noise starts late (say, 7am) stops for lunch (at 12) and before you have dinner (5pm). If you don't live the Swiss way then you'll be affected, but they don't care. Why aren't you up at 6am preparing for the day? You went to bed at 10pm so you've had enough sleep ...

Does that include Sundays too? Because we had our lot nearby out banging away at 8am the other Sunday. Thought it was supposed to be a day of rest here.

Re: Construction site noise - Mietreduktion

You all must be single - otherwise I could not understand those snappy answers. I take it with humor.

I usually get up at 3:50 in the morning, because I am a trained hard worker.

I go to work early and come home in the evening. That's right, I do not hear the noise. But young mothers with babies in their arms do. And sick people do.

We pay a swiss Miete - where I come from we had a whole single house for the same price. Over here there is construction noise around the building, getting louder almost daily. My request is valid.

Hello Medea,
I saw your post 2 seconds after I sent my response. You are not included :-)

No, on sunday there is no construction noise. But when the first lawn mower has finished its work, the second one begins.

Unless the noise is during the local quiet hours you have not much to stand on.

Re: Construction site noise - Mietreduktion

All I can suggest is contact your local tenant's association, ASCOLA it is in French. They may be able to tell you if any reductions in rent are due.

Mowing would have been quieter TiMow. What surprised me is that none of the immediate neighbours seem to have gone out and complained as they were banging away for a good hour or more. Maybe they did get notice they'd be working that Sunday, but we certainly didn't and we're only 50-75 metres away.

So how will money alleviate the noise, you going to buy ear plugs ?

Why should there be a reduction ? Does the landlord gain anything extra from the construction ?

Re: Construction site noise - Mietreduktion

I hate noises, more than anyone I know. But...

What do you suggest, that there's no construction at all? They already have allowed times and quiet times.

Why would your landlord give you a price reduction on the rent? Is it his/her fault that someone bought the plot close to their building and are now putting up a house?

We all have those unconfortable times every now and then (mine has been since August, I'm hoping they'll finish soon), that's the price we pay for living surrounded by other people.

Re: Construction site noise - Mietreduktion

I have a similar issue with mosquitos.
First I asked for a rent reduction and the landlord refused.
Then I asked for the landlord to kill them all. He again refused with the silly argument that this is "how nature works". Of course an unacceptable response.
What to do next?

Are you German?? Only country I have heard of where people love to lower the rent because of that.
As some others said, it´s part of life, other people want to live somewhere as well

If the construction is in your building then maybe but normally not. If it's in a nearby building then not a chance.

Re: Construction site noise - Mietreduktion

I feel for you, we live on the new SBB Durchmesserlinea and for five years we quite often had to put up with 24 hour work, it destroyed our sleeping patterns. Seriously, we should have moved, but our low rent dictated otherwise. We got 2k in compensation from the SBB, but tried and tried to no avail to get them to compensate more and without wanting a legal battle, many others failed trying to take them on, its much better now its over. Daytime work is disturbing but bearable, nighttime work is the killer. I would say if you cant bear the noise move out, I really wish we had during that time but I am also glad we still have our nice apt.
