Move took much longer than expected

Some days ago we moved to our new apartment, same neighborhood - few minutes from our old place. We got 6-8 quotations from moving companies, and they all estimated the required time to be 4-6 hours (we showed the flat and the stuff to move, we explained we had 3 very heavy pieces of furniture - all fine).

However, the move eventually took 10 hours
Just by observing, it took an exagerated amount of time to unmount/mount two Ikea Pax cupboards (if you have them, you know they are quite straighforward pieces to mount) and the bed frame. We noticed long interruptions (the three movers were all in the truck looking for some tools), mistakes (the furniture had to be partially unmounted again) and poor organization (boxes were filling up the rooms, then the movers decided to mount the double bed frame before the cupboard, so at the end there was no space to mount, only one person able to mount etc). We also noticed a lot of damages.

We are trying to negotiate and so far we basically got a bill for 9 hours instead of 10, and no moving boxes charged (that was anyway not more than CHF35).

Of course we would rather pay than start a legal process, but we think 7 hours would be fair -- basically we propose to pay CHF 1'300, while they are asking for CHF 1'600.

Do you guys have any experience with this? should we insist, or just take this rebate?

Thanks for any tips, experience, or moral support

What does the contract say with regards to extra hours?

Three movers, truck, and 10 hours, CHF 1600?

That's about half the going rate!

Not really half but it is difficult to say as there is a lot of missing information here.
What size truck? There are different rates for different size trucks, plus not all moving personnel are charged at the same rates.

Bottom line is that if you sign a contract with an hourly rate and no fixed price, you will pay for the hours required. BUT, if you had concerns on the move day about wasted time you needed to speak up then and there. Complaining after you get the bill is a lost cause.

From the OPs account they don't sound very competent but this is only one side of the story.

Re: Move took much longer than expected

Hello everybody,

my quotation said it would take 4-5 hours with 3 movers and a truck (CHF 180.- per hour). They came with a pretty small truck, so they needed to make two rounds. It was ok as the two flats are so close to each other (but they were not good drivers, it took every time 10 minutes to park )

The day of the move, when it was about 4-5pm, I asked what was going on, and we discussed extensively. They said that the furniture was heavy (... right) and generic excuses, like that they could not follow my instructions (I kept telling them since 8 o' clock our requirements, and they were ok) - however, they clearly wasted time and they clearly chose a funny strategy that caused a lot of delay. Only 1 guy could mount cupboards, at a certain point the other 2 were sitting on the stairs and waiting. My partner had to mount some pieces they were not able to mount...

I can honestly say that 4-5 hours was too optimistic, but 6 or 7 was really enough. I moved 3 years ago with the same cupboards, and the unmounting/mounting was maybe 1 hour in total and movers were totally relaxed about that. I mean, I could myself Mount a Pax cupboard in 1-2 hours!

Also, I would like to add all the quotations we got were very similar for price and duration of the move, we picked this Company because of "Quality mark" (eh eh) and good impression we had at the visit... and I think it is not normal to get a Quotation for 1000 and then have to pay 2000 for not really a reason... Maybe I am just naive about it?
