Velux Window Replacement (Aargau)

We just had a quote to replace three Velux windows in our roof with new ones (identical sizes). Two are quite small (ca. 400 x 600), the other a bit bigger (1000 x 1000). They were originally installed in 1992, and are nearly at end of life.

Total quote was 10,000CHF This offer would includes Velux blinds on the outside (solar powered) - OK, the blinds account for 2500CHF, but still that means 7500 for the windows alone..

And this is for drop-in replacements !

Anyone done this before, who could comment on the expected cost? Get someone in from just over the border?

Just seems absolutely astronomical (though this would not be the first time we've had astronomical quotes - usually a second, more reasonable one confirms the first was ridiculous)

At the risk of saying the obvious, get a second quote.

In this case size doesn't really matter

It is about right i would say, a Velux window is already around Chf 1'000-1'200.-- removal of tiles and old window, some work possibly to be done, re-fitting new window, doing the roof and copper work.....

I paid around Chf 2'200.-- for mine which is about 400x600 couple years back, this too was a replacement, but it doies take a bit more time than you think if it is doen properly.

Re: Velux Window Replacement (Aargau)

A way to get a second offer is to post your inquiry on Ofri.ch. Schreiners and window companies would then make offers. This is an example showing two bids to replace three Velux roof windows:

https://www.ofri.ch/jobs/9541

Another example:

https://www.ofri.ch/jobs/18088

(for more, google.ch, site: ofri.ch velux ersatz)

Also, have you considered having the windows re-built with new parts (which might be purchased or made by the Schreiner) and adjusted instead of replaced?

Unfortunately we have the same issue. 3 Velux windows that are 20 years old and need replacing. The outside frames are fine, so I hoped that we could find a carpenter to just make us new inner window frames. Nah! not a chance here in Swizzland, everyone says you'll need to buy new ones then change the roof and ceiling aperture sizes. Why have Velux discontinued making windows that will obviously need to be replaced one day? Ah, of course, so everyone can cash in.

Re: Velux Window Replacement (Aargau)

10K (even 7.5K without the outside blinds) does seem more expensive than what I guesstimated (ca. 1K - 1.5K per window) - considering that we had all the 'normal' windows replaced three years ago, and that cost ca. 15K and took three days. And they were triple-glazed.

Well, more quotes are now being requested, so let's see.

[As for second quotes, a while ago we had our concrete balcony chopped off. The guy was there for three days with a forklift truck, 16 kW (!) circular saw and cut the 4-tonne concrete slab off to within 3 mm of the facade. Huge job took three days (and it snowed) and cost 3300CHF (fixed price). Of course, we were left with the facade to repair. First quote 4500CHF (), second quote 1500CHF (). For _exactly_ the same work..]

Re: Velux Window Replacement (Aargau)

We have replaced Velux windows and the 3 quotes from Swiss firms were almost identical. What you need to look out for are the details, for example, if you have copper now whether the quote is for copper and not alu.

As for discontinued Velux window sizes, Velux sell an adapter kit so you can fit the new window into the same space as the old. Our windows were 30 years old so we needed this kit. If you anyone quoting does not know about the kit don't use them.

The prices in Germany for Velux products are significantly lower. You just need to find someone who will carry out the work.

Fantastic news, thank you. Nobody that we have spoken to knows about the adapter kit that you have mentioned. If I can find them on their website, I reckon it could save us thousands. What did you end up paying for the 3 windows to be replaced?

Re: Velux Window Replacement (Aargau)

The Velux Germany website has a list of replacement part exploded diagrams (Ersatzteil-‹bersichten), including for older windows. After opening the pdf, exploded diagrams showing the individual window components can be seen by paging to page 2 and beyond of the pdf:

http://www.fachkunden.velux.de/fachk...iluebersichten

For technicians, it is possible to order Velux replacement parts on-line at this link:

I would skip the blinds on the outside and go with indoor blinds. What about a rain sensor? I think this is sensible. Also practical on the inside are window screens.

Re: Velux Window Replacement (Aargau)

I just saw a www.velux.ch ad in the Postauto bus (Baden) - something about free installation until Nov. 30th, but I don't know how to find the info.

Re: Velux Window Replacement (Aargau)

Thanks for all the info; I was not aware of the adapter kit for the older windows - this may be something worth looking into and we'll check with the next firm. However, if we go from the original wooden windows to plastic ones, then this may not be an option.

As for the blinds outside, we'll skip this and have blinds inside. The other item that the quote contained (which I didn't initially see - it was split between two pages..!) was the electrically-operated window mechanism (with rain sensor). I've experienced the combination of open Velux window and sudden rain shower twice now, and the results can be frustratingly messy! So, we might consider this option.

Anyway, yes, free fitting is the current offer (can be seen on www.velux.ch)

You can switch from wood to plastic. It is all about the size of the window.

In Japan our Velux windows were electrically operated with a rain sensor. Was brilliant.

If you want something on the outside of the window you can buy sunshades. It is a roller shade and you can leave it hooked to the window frame. I just installed one on one of our windows. The choices for blinds on the inside are extensive. It is really worth a trip to the velux showroom.
