Moving to Lausanne from Zurich

Dear guys,

I am in a situtation where I have to move from Zurich to Lausanne and the salary offered to me is 80K per annum and I have to support my wife and baby with this money. What do you think? Is it feasible?. I was earning 86K while in Zurich and the officials in the company mentioned that since cost of living in Lausanne is lower than Zurich it is refelcted in the salary! Is this right?

And for the apartment which area I should be looking for 3 bedroom apartment not in the city but in the outskirts where I can commute by public transport to Lausanne.

Please throw a light on these and I would appreciate the great help!!

Regards
K

Re: Moving to Lausanne from Zurich

Depends on how you want to live, if you are with a long travel + old flat I guess you can get buy.

lausanne is cheaper? Never heard of that and the tax is higher

Re: Moving to Lausanne from Zurich

You will not notice a bit of difference in the cost of living in Lausanne vs. Zurich. They are both equally high. 80k per year for a family of three is really just hovering above the poverty level.

Having said that, you will be able to find somewhere to live on that salary outside the center. Check Ecublens, Renens, Echandens to the west.

Mostly what she said. I've been in Lausanne for 10 years and the only two differences I see between Lausanne and ZH are (A) the cost of eating out (higher in ZH, I feel as though I hemorrhage money whenever I'm visiting there) and (B) rents in prime locations are higher in ZH as well. But food prices in Migros and Coop are no different, taxes are apparently a bit higher here, and I believe health insurance premiums are higher on this side of the Roestigraben as well. In both places, if you choose to live a bit outside the centre of town you can find a place to live that isn't eye-wateringly expensive, but it's still not cheap.

Do you feel as though you are in a position to negotiate the salary? Being able to maintain the 86k a year would certainly help you and your family a lot.

Didn't find Lausanne any cheaper than Zurich, but I've only been there a few times as a tourist, maybe rent could be a little lower?

Will you company offer any compensation for the relocation?

Re: Moving to Lausanne from Zurich

A friend of mine went the other way and his contracting rate was reduced due to the lower taxes in Zurich...

Re: Moving to Lausanne from Zurich

Vaud has higher taxes than Zurich. i am getting 83,000 CHF per year (13 month salary) and per month I get ~4,900 per month so you can get an idea. My boyfriend just moved in Zurich two weeks ago and we are in the process of looking for an apartment. However I live in Lausanne for a year know and I can assure you that the apartments are not cheaper here. Maybe in upscale neighbourhoods in Zurich apartments are 100 -200 CHF more but nothing extreme. If you don't care living in the city centre I would suggest Rennens (2 bedroom apartments can be between 1300 - 2000 depending on what you want), Ecublens, St Sulpice and Morges - most people on a budget live in that area as it can take 50 min to get in Lausanne by bus in the morning or 8 min by train, however is a nice area with nice, affordable and reasonable apartments (many families at my work, where only one parent works, live in that area)). On the other side of Lausanne Pully and Lutry are really nice but a new place may be pricy. I hope that helps a bit

Welcome in Lausanne!!!!

Re: Moving to Lausanne from Zurich

You could also try looking northwards. Places like Cheseaux and Echallens are a little way out in the countryside (to a Lausannois they might as well be in France!) but are well connected by a regional train that takes 20 or 30 minutes respectively (www.leb.ch).
There is a new building complex in Echallens nearing completion and the apartments are all for rent (not for sale).

Re: Moving to Lausanne from Zurich

Thanks a lot guys!!! you are all awesome!!

well to begin with I cannot negotiate to the company as the salaries are fixed by the Swiss National Science Foundation. So I have to adjust with the payment.. As for the rent I will look towards northeast of Lausanne and I hope I would be lucky enough to find one.

Sorry, this is retarded. They want to transfer you and pay less? Regardless of the cost of living, you should never EVER accept a lower salary if you transferring within the same company. It's disrespectful. If you have no choice and they might fire you, try to postpone it as far as possible so you have time to find another job.
