looking for aprtment in Basel..how far in advance to come?

Hello everyone!
I am moving to Basel with my husband and 2 kids(1 and 3) in third week of Jan 2016. My husband and I want to make a trip to Basel to organise in advance an apartment and a german speaking kindergarten for my son.( to learn the language) We are not sure when to come as I imigine most places are closed from 24th dec to 5th Jan approx and then this is a bit to0 close.
If we come in end Nov/early Dec do we have to pay for the apartment from then ( rather expensive) or can we find something and start contract from mid Jan?
Looking to move to Basel land ( Oberwil, Bottmingen, Therwil even Laufen area for some greenery and still public transport to city where my job is)
Thanks....need to book flights so info much appreciated!
Suzy

There is big demand for housing in basel with places going quickly.

All depends how much you want to spend.

I suggest looking on homegate.ch for what's around and contact the agencies directly.

Be aware that many will prefer to give apartments to Swiss locals.

Good luck.

do note you'll also find that nobody will rent to you if you don't have a permit.....
is your employer not offering some assistance?

For what it's worth, you may find you want to try and take a place from 1st January which is one of the official moving dates - but in Basel, you'll find it's not so restrictive.

Thanks folks. yes I have already contacted a few agencies and got one reply. I dont quite understand the post about a permit. I will of course get a B permit but I probably wont have this document ready when we are looking for apartments. i will have an offer letter etc from my company.

Actually, the biggest agency Gribi&Theurilat will not allow 1st january movings. It's the only forbidden date of the year, so you are right for the "not so restrictive" part, but still be careful about the 1st January in Basel.
