Drive to France and move things back to Swiss by car on weekends

Hi EFers,
Having read thru some relevant threads but still not sure.

I just moved in Lausanne this week from China, haven't got residence permit yet, now holding a visa D for Swiss.

I left some stuff with friend in France a few months ago, about 2 big suitcases and 5-8 cardboard boxes.
Plan to rent a car, maybe a SUV or minivan, drive to France to pick up my stuff and drive back to Lausanne next weekend, need to work during weekdays.

Do I need to do the customs form 18.44? But seems customs only work on weekdays. Or I just drive through on weekends?

Thanks for helping!!

Swiss customs are always on duty, even if the border crossing appears to be unmanned, there may be a control point set up a few kilometers further on.

If the border is manned, you should slow down to 3 or 5 kph and be prepared to stop, when signalled to do so.

If you wait until you are living here, and have a residence permit, you can import all your stuff tax free wth the form 18.44 procedure.

Otherwise you might have to pay tax, by weight, including the boxes and suitcases....

You mean if not signalled to stop, I can just slowly drive through?

Maybe a good idea to wait until I have my permit.
But I left some things I need really soon in France. So would be good if I can go next weekend.
So without permit, I must pay tax by weight if stopped?

If you only bring a few things in I don't think they'll be too concerned about it. A suitcase and a box or two will probably be fine even if you are stopped as you can just say you've been visiting friends for the weekend.
If you do it in a couple of trips you should be fine without having to declare anything ( unless you have a lot iof very expensive stuff in which case it's best to wait until you have your permit and import them properly).

Having said that we imported our stuff into Switzerland before we had the actual permit as we couldn't get the permit until we moved here so it may be possible to fill out the import form and bring them anyway.

Maybe I will prepare the form without permit, and bring the stuff back because I really need them.

With the form but without permit yet it should not be smuggling I guess? :P

Re: Drive to France and move things back to Swiss by car on weekends

We drove over with a whole LWB transit van of stuff from the UK. We never even though about importing officially, luckily they only seemed interested in selling us our vignette .. maybe as hubby was Swiss they weren't interested.

What if he drives through more quickly, say, >20 km/h?
