Experience with finding a flat in Zurich

Hello,

I am moving to Zurich in January for work. (I will be living with my boyfriend in Aargau whilst I am looking for somewhere to live.)

I've heard that it's really difficult to find a flat in Zurich? Does anyone have any experience, advice or tips about renting in Zurich? I'm hoping to find somewhere by March/April, I'm not fussy about where. I have been looking in Altstetten as I lived there before when I lived in Switzerland a few years ago and it's a bit cheaper than some other areas.

What areas of Zurich are easier to find apartments and a little more reasonable? Any advice would be great! Or even better if anyone happens to be leaving in March or April let me know

Thanks!

Re: Experience with finding a flat in Zurich

There is a lot of information to be found among these threads. Start with that, although you probably are already familiar.

There is a lot of new apartment buildings coming onto the market in Oerlikon, Wallisellen and Duebendorf. It's quite booming, they are basically building a whole new suburb. You may want to have a look at that. Not bad in terms of connection, similar to Altstetten. These buildings are not completely filled yet. Price is reasonable, design is modern, quality is meh (they go for the quick buck).

What is your plan for the dog while you go to work? This is the question landlords and owners are asking today. Unless you are taking your dog with you to work I strongly suggest putting a plan in place which will help support a rental application. Apartment hunting in Zurich is already a challenge, dog friendly housing is going to make it that much more difficult. It only gets easier when you have a very high rental budget and are not looking at the same flat as 50 other people.

My boyfriend is moving in with me and will be in during the days so she won't be in alone most of the time!

I saw quite some new buildings are under construction. Hopefully soon finding an apartment won't be as difficult as it used to be.
