what is needed to register address if you share appartment?

Hello,

I have several questions about "administrative pratical issues" when sharing an apartment rather than renting one on my own at the beginning.

I am sure some members on that board sharing an apartment had to
deal with this issue.

for several reasons , i entertain the thought of finding a 3-6 months temporary place in order to visit and to decide where i would like to have a permanent residence in Switzerland. (my work does not tie me to a specific city in Switzerland, thus i can basically choose any place where there is a high speed internet connection and I like the place)

thus if i assume that i am going to share an apartment for about 6 months,

1. could there be a problem when trying to use the address of the shared apartment when registering with the communal authorities after the arrival? Since i would not have a utility bill in my name, what kind of document would be needed?

- would a simple letter from the person holding the lease or the landlord would be enough ?

2. what about the bank account ? would a bank accept a simple letter in order to open an account or are they going to request a utility or phone bill?

If I refer to the USA , it is very difficult to open a bank account if you do not have an original utility bill. a lease will not work.

Since i am not familiar with the way things work In Switzerland, i would to know in advance rather than having a bad surprise at arrival.

in summary for every basic registration, it all depends about being able to confirm an address of residence in order to obtain a service . what is the usual document accepted by administrations and banks ?

any advice or tip would be welcome.

thank you

1) The landlord is also obliged to inform the community about tenants - so all you do is register with the temporary address.

2) Utility bills are not acceptable in Switzerland for anything but paying them. You will receive a residency permit. Use this to open a bank account.

Re: what is needed to register address if you share appartment?

Hello AbFab,

thank you for your answer and to clarify further, since we are talking in this example about a shared apartment, the landlord will be aware of the new person sharing the apartment (maybe even signing on the lease as a co-tenant) .

if this is the case , it is simple enough

1. I register with the communal authorities after the arrival just by giving the address , I do not need any document or proof of address like a utility bill.

2. and on his side, the landlord registers as well that I am a new tenant for this address.

3. i receive a resident permit after a number of days by mail I guess
(i have a french passport)

You can reside for three months without a permit. If you want a permit then you have to be either a) employed / start a business or b) apply for a EU-jobseeker's residence permit which allows you to stay for six months. It is by no means an automated process.

Re: what is needed to register address if you share appartment?

Thank you Shorrick

yes i understood the part of applying for a self employed resident permit by reading other posts in the forum. great information.

i was just concerned while reading other posts because a member was saying that the landlord did not want to give him the lease because he did not have a resident permit. and the guy could not get a resident permit because he did not have an address.....
(not sure if it was correct or not but it is a point to take into consideration)

thus endless circle.

i want to prevent this situation . thus if i have to go through an intermediate phase of sharing an apartment and be able to do the first registration and resident permit formalities rapidly, i will choose this road.
then take the time to look around to find a place fit for a long residence.
