Is Niederrohdorf close to Baden?

We have a child starting Kindergarten at the Baden/ZIS international school and an infant. We are unable to find an appropriate place in Baden and were wondering what neighboring towns are worth looking at? We've looked in Niederrohrdorf and were wondering if anyone out there could let us know what they think of the commute to Baden from there as well as commute to Zurich from there. Is the bus to train route sensible?

I'd appreciate the advice of anyone living in or near Baden!

Re: Is Niederrohdorf close to Baden?

It's a 20 minute Post bus ride between Niederrohdorf (Gemeinde bus stop) and Baden.

The bus timetable can be found by plugging in Niederrohdorf and Baden into this page, which will then ask you to select which stop in Niederrohdorf you want. There are quite a few of them, so to get the right times, plug in the correct one.

Post buses often run every 30 minutes meaning if you miss your buss you may find yourself waiting a long time till the next one comes along..

The traffic coming into Baden from that direction is very bad in rush hour. While the bus has its own lane, this is only until it gets closer to Baden (around Daettwil)and then it sits in traffic along with everyone else.
There are other villages which offer better access to Baden, in my opinion.
Are you looking on your own for housing? Does anyone in your family speak German?

Which other villages are better to look in for housing? None us speak German, but we're looking forward to learning it!

There are a lot of villages in the Baden area, they would be visible on a map. This is a good website www.mapsearch.ch You can zoom in or out and see the villages. You can also look at details, such as proximity to shopping, etc.

There is a lot of information on this forum regarding transportation links if you want to look up schedules www.sbb.ch. This will give you the information for trains, city buses (RVBW) and regional buses(Post Bus).

Without German language ability, it is difficult to find a place on one's own.

Re: Is Niederrohdorf close to Baden?

We just bought a house in Oberrohrdorf which is in the same area your looking at, while commuting into Zurich is no problem via car getting into Baden itself is a bit of a pain as someone else has already pointed out.

Ah, I'd forgotten about that... It can be a real pain.

It may help to look at the map for the normal (non-Postbus) buses - RVBW (Regional Bus Services Baden-Wettingen). The Birmenstorf and Ruetihof lines in the bottom left hand corner are the ones which feed into the traffic jams mentioned above. There are some very nice places out there though, so I wouldn't discount them just because of the rush hour traffic jams.

Dear Mrs. Doolittle, thanks so much for your advice in the forum! I'm new here. We're relocating to Baden area next year, as I will start a new role 1st March. We try to move (my husband and 3 yr old daughter) in April. I saw that it is soooo difficult to get an apartment, for people already in CH, let alone for us who are not there yet. My husband is German, I'm originally from China. We‘re moving from England to CH. To be honest, we’re Brexit excapees, so we want to move rather sooner than later. We’ve seen nice apartments in Daetwill and Niederrohrdorf, also because we heard the schools/kindergartens in Daetwill are really good. But reading the posts here about rush hour traffic put me off a little. I wonder what has the situation improved since then? We’re also looking at Nussbaumen, Untersiggenthal, Gebenstorf, Turgi, Rieden, Neuenhof. I just don’t know enough about Childcare facilities in these places, and traffic. We love nature, so I’m primarily looking at villages around Baden. But I will work full time, so ideally I don’t want to be stuck in traffic jams everyday. I think I’ll mainly take public transport.
Additionally, I wonder if living along the Sbahn line from Zurich to Brugg would make sense? Are there places to avoid? (e.g. very loud, not good childcare etc.?)
Really appreciate anyone’s advice!
