Glarus Süd

Anybody has experience with living in Glarus Süd?
Given that it is a valley, I am curious about the amount of sun especially in winter.

Re: Glarus Süd

Depends where you live: plenty of sunshine in Schwanden, not so much in Linthal.

Where you thinking about moving to?

We were having a look at Luchsingen. That seems to be in the middle of Schwanden and Linthal.

Re: Glarus Süd

Looking at the topography, it would depend very much on the exact location of the house. Best thing would be to come on over late one afternoon/early evening.

Even after the sun has gone behind the mountain it stays light for a while anyway.

I'm tempted to nip down there this afternoon and have a look for you!

Well, it won't be a patch on Aargau or Oklahoma or wherever, but for a life in the mountains, not too bad at all. Luchsingen is on a southeast-facing slope so you'd have sun most of the day.

You can have a play with sunrise and sunset times on Google Earth for free:
https://support.google.com/earth/answer/148187?hl=en
but I just did that for our location and wasn't impressed, it overestimated the sun we get here in winter by a good couple hours. Seems to only take very local terrain into account.

A much better alternative is suncurves.com. They'll do you a limited freebie analysis (free registration required) or you can pay about 6chf per location for the full whack. I just ordered ours and the results match up pretty convincingly with my own data: 4 hours in winter up to 11.5 in the summer. At a guess I'm thinking Luchsingen would be fairly similar, maybe slightly less.

(That 4 hours in winter sounds awful but it really isn't: the mountains around us are sunlit for several hours before and after that. At those times of day it's basically like sitting in deep shade looking out at a sunny landscape.)

Re: Glarus Süd

There is another website where you can look up the hours of sunshine but bottom line is that if you want to know the exact situation you need to visit, and not just once.

In my opinion Ennenda and Mitlodi are the sunniest villages. Mitlodi has shops, school, new builds and railway links too..

Have been looking at properties in Näfels and Diesbach. I am completely convinced that the real estate agents are being creative with the truth.

Re: Glarus Süd

Woah - stop the presses!

I was going to pop in this thread to moan about the Glarner Hundegesetz which has kept me from considering properties in that lovely canton, but just before I hit 'submit' a little voice in the back of my head told me to double check a point...

And to my amazement, unless my eyes deceive me it looks like article 27 was revised last summer!

Did Glarus really do away with the Bewilligungspflicht for keeping more than one dog per household?

Of so.... O frabjous day!

<scuttles off to see if *that* property is still on the market...>

Sure was they replaced it with a required course for first-time dog owners. BSL still a thing but we can't have everything (or at least not all at once).

Soooo... hello, new neighbor?

Sadly, it looks like *that* property is no longer listed anywhere, so I'll have to assume it was snapped up by some other lucky person. Ah well, I should have been paying more attention...

I have a vague dream of a holiday home, as a compromise between where we need to be and where we want to be. Maybe just a dream, but at least the revised Hundegesetz puts Glarus back on the list of possibilities. Who knows what the future holds...

Creative in terms of their description of number of hours of sunshine in winter and summer. Don't want to escape the fog in Aargau for living in shade most of the day.

Trust me, even when the sun is behind the mountain, the blue sky is much nicer than the dark, grey nebel of the lowlands!

Some villages are better than others. Follow Mathnut's link for specific details, but in general, Netstal is pretty shady, Glarus and Schwanden less so. Most of Glarus Nord is pretty good too.
