Come back when you have your own place built and they are smoking all over the place?
And why the ** should you only complain when it is finished? Legally speaking OP has every right to complain.......

You smoking anything now?
By the way, I'm having an apartment built...but the thought of checking out if the plumber is smoking in my bathroom to be doesn't quite keep me awake. By next July I'm sure the smell will be gone

Haha yes..true... as they say... sad but true.
Not sad, that's just how it goes. As simple as that. Sure we like to think of how the fired worker will be out of a job and he's got bills to pay...and probably kids whose birthdays are coming up but so be it. If pops can't play by the rules or if he thinks that the world is his oyster and he can do as he pleases, then so be it. He was in no position to smoke and that's what ultimately got to him. A simple as that. Discipline along with patience is a virtue, some people have it and others seemingly don't.

Wrong again. I don't smoke and never have. I just can't believe how a problem can be made out of a few cigarrette ends on the floor of an unfinished building and the smell which will be (probably aready is) non-existent before removal date, because of which someone has possibly lost their job.

Just maybe he should have been getting on with his job rather than smoking. Workmen do actually get breaks to smoke, or drink a coffee, or play on their smart phones, or eat a gipfeli.

If it's an apartment, legally speaking shouldn't you wait until the place is completed and the bank releases it to you before you could complain ? I know that there were problems with some people buying apartments and checking out the building site so often that they would be a nuisance (not your case of course).

IMO a few cigarettes is not a big deal. They are not working for a big bank where they can go on break any time... If they can't even smoke they may not work as well

Appreciate the thought, I'm a man
Anyway no, I'm not a smoker (stopped many moons ago), I'm a libertarian
You know that when the owner will finally take possession of the house there will NOT be any smell of smoke. There are people doing hard work, sometimes out in the cold, what harm can they do (to you) by having a quick fag every now and then ? Maybe there's no even windows installed.... it seems it's a complain more for the sake of it rather than for a real issue.
Maybe you should have read the whole thread properly before commenting.

It is not an apartment, it is a house, a single family dwelling which will be completed and ready to move into next week. There are definitely Windows installed, and plastered walls and tiled floors etc.

There are no smoking rules on site which have been repeatedly broken over a period of many months. The workers have breaks, same as anyone else in any other job and should be able to wait until break time for a cigarette just the same as everyone else in every other job has to do.

What if the workers decided to break the other rules too?

It's highly likely that there will no longer be a smell of smoke when Paddy moves in this week but imagine if all the workmen on the site had decided that the no smoking rule didn't apply to them. Wet plaster, bare walls etc absorb smells and there could have been a long term lingering smoke smell if they'd all been smoking in there.

It's not likely that one complaint about smoking from one client was the reason for the plumber losing his job. Paddy already said the company wasn't happy with their work for other reasons too. Even if it was the reason, he had been warned previously and had chosen to ignore it.

Constant drive-by groaning can - a single drive by groan can't - unless you do it to LiB

In this case the main contractor has a set of rules - an individual decided to ignore the rules - they were disciplined - and then dismissed.

The actual rule that was broken is moot - you may agree/disagree with it - and like the other 17,386 threads on EF about smoking, you'll have those who are impassioned on both sides.

My view is that as soon as there is any "final fit" in the building then smoking, as per the contractors rules, should have stopped inside.

Re: Contractors smoking in new build

As I mentioned at the beginning of the thread, I am an intermittent smoker myself (at the pub, after a few pints), but never in the house. As a non-smoker, my wife has every right to insist that the workers do not smoke and, as has been stated repeatedly, there are clear rules about not smoking in the property. She didn't go round to try and catch them out, it was simply a progress check that we are entitled to, seeing as we are taking out a construction loan to build the sodding place.
Seeing as Enaj and superpippo, or whatever, are OK to let someone smoke in our house, lets all go round to theirs and have a fag, shall we? I might even stub it out on their kitchen floor. Anyway, the smell will be gone in a few days, won't it? It's just a first world problem after all .

I agree completely.

I doubt anybody gives a stuff about smoking in site during the initial 'gros oeuvre' phase of the build but once the building is 'closed' and the interior finishing is being done then the smoking ban should have been respected.

A few cigarettes in the construction site ARE a big deal - not the least the fire hazard. This is not a smokers vs. non-smokers discussion. This is a discussion about not following clearly stated, enough repeated work rules. It's a matter of work ethics, and opposite to what people might think, construction is a repeating business - a very tight niche, completely defined by word of mouth, with very long memories and that can hold a permanent grudge. If you can't get your workers obeying the rules - no matter which rules we are talking about - you will loose business. And believe me, right now no company wants to loose business, because there are enough options out there. And rules are there for a reason, and you are expected to follow them, as with everything in life. It's up to each individual to decide if paying a fine or getting fired is worth the thrill of breaking a rule.

Also, construction workers CAN and MUST have breaks. It's all very well defined by law. And Unia makes sure to protect any worker that has been denied his right to a break (during which he can smoke, in places were it is allowed).

That is exactly what the workmen who are replacing our neighbour's roof are doing right now.
They started work at 7/7.30 and at 9 on the dot they were all sitting in the garden eating, drinking coffee, smoking and playing on their smart phones.

Anyway, if you try to see things from a different perspective i.e. there's a war going on in Syria and Ukraine. Millions of displaced people on the move looking for a new place to live and dying on the way, people dying from painful diseases etc. then I think you would be grateful for what you DO have and not upset about a few hardly worth mentioning fag ends in your unfinished house

Wrong again. I don't smoke and never have. I just can't believe how a problem can be made out of a few cigarrette ends on the floor of an unfinished building and the smell which will be (probably aready is) non-existent before removal date, because of which someone has possibly lost their job.
1) If "someone" has allegedly lost their jobs, it would be only due to their own actions and breach of clear rules in that line of work. So no misplaced pity here.

2) Smoking does leave a smell, I don't know what, maybe some melted residues or something but I can tell if someone smoked in a place even not regularly, simply with smells.

3) Not even talking about possible tiny damages like burning stuff on sides or something

4) It's also about mutual trust. Now the OP might have to check everything for possible burn damages. I would.
Same goes for the owners, then knowing that this tiny breach is happening, I'd fear that the buyer will burn discreetly something and then complain it was made by workers. So yeah, trust is going 2 ways, its more simple to follow the agreed rules or at least show respect.

Anyway the guy is buying something new, very expensive, some respect has to be shown by the employees, end off!

Smoke Screen!

You know very well you could have groan that person on different threads-
And the groans he gets here by others have nothing to do with alleged "drive by groaning".

So your explanations attempts are not proving anything, if not using others disagreements to reinforce your side.

Justice 's been served.

PS and do use PM for that type of things. It's irrelevant to the topic! (Like my comment but then it's a closing the off topic attempt)

That is, what is called a "thought-terminating cliché" in Germany.
You can justify almost everything with that.
Bedbugs in your hotel? Be happy that you don't have to live in a refugee-camp in Turkey. Or still in Aleppo.
Your flight is delayed for half a day? You're lucky you don't have to pay a smuggler thousands for a passage on a derelict boat!

etc.pp.
