Relocating to Zurich. What to take with us?

Hi,

I am new to the forum, happy to be here
Me and my spouse are relocating to Zurich in October.

We will have temporary fully equiped housing for 3 months, during which we will look for a more permanent appartment for rent.

We are now making the decisions on what to take with us, and would be happy for an advice. The employer can move to Zurich free of charge any stuff that we have, but we don't want to bring things we won't really need.
  • I understood that most of the rental apartments in Zurich are unfurnished, so it would make sense to bring with us all the furniture we have. Is this correct, or we may be able to find a furnished appartment?
  • Should we bring our washing machine? (I've read most of the houses have a laundry room, and we might not even be allowed to have our own washing machine)
  • Should we bring our fridge?
  • Heating appliances?
  • Are there some already existing lists with recommendations for what to bring/not to Switzerland?

Thank you

The answer is, as usual, "It depends".

Where are you coming from? (Are your appliances electrically compatible?)
Fridges, stoves, and heating are usually part of the apartment/house. Laundry also, but not always, and it is sometimes prohibited to have a machine in your apartment.
A deep freezer might be worth bringing, if you have a space for it.
I would try to postpone the decision about furniture and appliances until you've actually chosen a place, just bring the stuff you need for the 3 months you have to look.

Re: Relocating to Zurich. What to take with us?

Might help if we knew where you were moving from. For example, small electrical appliances might make sense to bring if you are moving from an EU country and all you have to do is change the plugs, less sense if you are moving from the US and would need to plug everything into a step-down transformer.

Most (nearly all) apartments in Zürich are rented unfurnished.

"Unfurnished" in this context means nothing to sit on, sleep in, usually nothing to put clothes in (built-in wardrobes are not common here), no curtains or indoor blinds on the windows, and no light fixtures in most of the house either. You will see bare wires sticking down out of holes in the ceiling, that's where you hang your lights.

"Unfurnished" does however normally include major kitchen appliances (fridge, stove, usually a dishwasher), metal outdoor blinds, and access to a communal washer and dryer. Lights that are integrated into furniture, e.g. kitchen and bathroom cabinets, will be included too.

Thank you, it really helps!

We will be moving from Tel Aviv, Israel (same plugs as EU), so we just need to change the plugs.

Should we bring our fridge? Probably not - unless you want to run a backup in your cellar/storage.
Heating appliances? Depends, in the boonies maybe. In a city, just close the windows.

Unfurnished apartments will still have basic appliances: cooker, washing machine, dishwasher.

You don't need to bring those, and can presume that 99% of apartments you will look at will have them.

As for what not to bring to Switzerland: high expectations.

Re: Relocating to Zurich. What to take with us?

Welcome to the Forum and soon to Switzerland.

Here are some links to get you started. The search box is in the upper right corner of your screen if you have other questions.

What to bring from the US?

What to bring from Home

preparation for going there : anything special to bring/do before?

What to bring? What to just buy in Switzerland?

Moving to Zurich From US - What to Bring?

How much money to bring?

What Should We Bring

Can we bring money into Switzerland?

What to bring to Zurich? Moving

Arrive in 2 weeks, what to bring?

What to bring in bulk

Whatever you bring you'll either have to dispose of here or haul back home when you're done living in CH. Although many companies help with moving costs coming this direction, many don't help with costs when you leave. Something to keep in mind.

They may not work... it's a three hole plug here .... but we have found enough variation to make it annoying.

I'd suggest you look on some Swiss online supermarkets to get anew idea of produce brands and types and stock up on stuff you may find it more difficult to source here. Same goes for any cosmetics and toiletries. If you are "loyal" to a particular brand you again may not find it here.

For certain things it is a case of hours can get them butility you do pay a ridiculous premium.

I tend to bulk buy a certain brand of makeup etc when visiting the UK because I can't get it here and I'm fussy about my mascara! If you have children it would be worth bringing a stock of whatever they can't live without until you can source alternatives etc.
