Darker Evenings - Burglar Warnings

A reminder for everyone that as the dusk comes earlier, makes it easier for burglars to spot empty houses/low ground flats...

Good time to check or install timers on plugs with lights.

This is especially good advice for recent arrivals to this country, it does happens here too...
(we got burgled 3 years ago exactly at this time of the year as we had forgotten the lights - luckily the burglars got interrupted)

Re: Darker Evenings - Burglar Warnings

Unfortunately we got burglar-ed the week the clock turned one hour back ( Nov first week ) on a friday ( glattbrugg ) . We were out from 9.30am to 3.30pm.

They took some ornaments ( luckily we had insurance) and some children clothes ( ??? no idea why ). If you are around that region, be careful !

Re: Darker Evenings - Burglar Warnings

I'm sorry to hear that this happened, rgc. I hope your insurer plays nice, that you can recoup most of your loss.

I'd like to say 'I hope the miscreants will be caught' but sadly I know how little chance of that happening there is.

Burglary is becoming ever more common where we live, a sad sign of changing times.

It seems as if there is little effort to combat burglery, the reaction around here seems to be just a shrug of the shoulders as if a break-in is inevitable, with a reminder to up one's insurance coverage.

For this reason I have stopped training my dogs not to bark at movement outside our house while they are inside.

When several neighbors were burgled at the same time we were left alone. I am convinced that was because it is obvious to even a casual burgler, let alone a pro who has been casing the neighborhood, that in our house 'there be dragons'. The Muttley Crew sound mighty fierce from behind closed doors.

(And before the anyone jumps in re: barking... The dogs are trained to 'normal' expectations of quiet. When I am home if needed I quiet them immediately. But when I am gone they are my security system. My direct neighbor is grateful that they bark once in a while, as a burgler cannot tell if the woof comes from his house or mine. He benefits from their watchfulness.)

The times they are a-changin'. Even in Switzerland.

The 'FAKE TV" lights are recommended by the local police. You can find them at Praktikus. ch

I thought of getting on of those fake TV lamps but I couldn't stand the thought of Billag coming around repeatedly saying "We've got you now!"

Re: Darker Evenings - Burglar Warnings

We got burgled on Christmas day in central Zug. We live on the ground floor and didn't have plugs with lights. First time ever. They literally turned 2 rooms upside down; we suspect they got interrupted when our cat sitter came in to feed the cat. Awful feeling. Take care and install those lights!

Sorry to hear that.

The "best" TV-fake apparantly at amazon.de (nope, no delivery to CH). Definitely cheap

But the burglars know about those fake tv-lights too ....

Re: Darker Evenings - Burglar Warnings

So sorry to hear about the break-in, Stephinzug.

While waiting in line at the Coop B/H a few weeks ago I saw something claiming to be a ‘fake barking’ motion sensor devise.

No idea if it works or if it sounds remotely like the real thing. But perhaps something to look into as burglaries become more and more part of the Swiss landscape. I still maintain that the Muttley Crew are my best deterrent.

Burglaries over a holiday are sadly becoming more frequent. Thieves know that people are likely to be away, empty homes are easier pickings. When we travel we have a sitter move into our home, primarily to care for the mutts, of course. That the house is not left empty is a nice added bonus.

But even if one does not need per care one can use similar services. There are several house sitting service providers, some do this as an exchange, some as a commercial venture. Perhaps something to look into if one is worried.

Re: Darker Evenings - Burglar Warnings

It's crap that you got burgled. Never happened to me, and I hope it never will. (Only had to put up with petty thievery and assault...)

I do wonder whether fake lights/dogs/TVs actually work. I'm sure they make people feel safer, but is there any evidence about their efficacy?

I was reading an article in a Swiss newspaper recently that claimed burglaries are declining.

Basically because the proceeds are declining;
  • Most people use cards so keep little money at home
  • Ever fewer people buy quality expensive jewellery
  • Smartphones, tablets and PCs are password protected so hard to sell
  • TVs get ever larger so not easy to transport
  • HiFi systems are going out of fashion

So what is there left that is worth stealing?

I was wondering today; As I never watch the teli anymore a burglar who invests time in spying out his (sorry, maybe her) vistims would probably have a giggle if I suddenly had such a thing?

I know my neighbour would tease me about it (watching teli again?) - so he might be the perfect guinea pig to find out if they look real

There are some tables here that suggest that security measures do make a difference.

They don't generally stop a burglar as such but they make your property less attractive to burgle than the one next to yours.

There's a lot of data but the conclusion alone is worth reading.
