Need opinion: memory foam vs spring mattress? (+ where to buy)

Good morning on a cold Sunday,

I'm looking for a good mattress as I've had some back pain recently from the one we have in our rental.

My requirements are:

100 x 210 or 100x220 dimensions
Price range up to 6000chf
Side sleeper, never on back or stomach.
Looking for good quality, not sure on type

I was not initiated until now in the world of mattresses and always thought memory foam ones were the cheap ones. But with research lately I see they are now the best ones as with gel you don't get hot anymore.

So the question is: who has experience of using both memory foam and spring mattresses and which would you recommend? What should I be looking for to buy a quality mattress?

Also: I tried Magic Schlaf Zug and Fischer&Margraf. Any other online places you recommend? As they all buy from Germany anyway if I was willing to drive somewhere and buy it from there would it be worth it?

Thanks in advance for your comments

Did you try the search function? One of these threads may help ( not the first one obviously).

On home24.ch you can find some 'ortho' mattresses in the 'naturmatratzen' section, both gel and spring types.
The most expensive there are around CHF 700 so if you're really willing to spend CHF 6K as indicated in the opening post then perhaps their choice is not wide enough.

I too have back problems and have tried both. We went from sprung to memory foam and very quickly back to sprung. I just couldn't get comfy and my back ache became worse with the memory foam.
Bought the most recent from the mattress shop near Movenpick on Baarstrasse in Zug, sorry can't remember the name at the moment. Expensive but worth it in my opinion. They have a number so stores, the one in/on edge of Zurich has a bigger selection and the guy there speaks English. They are made to order in Italy I think and the lead time to delivery is 2 to 3 months.
Lots of natural fibres used and they have winter and summer sides so you don't get too hot.

Re: Need opinion: memory foam vs spring mattress? (+ where to buy)

Personally, I would go for the hardest and thinnest mattress. I would go for a thin one because it can compress less and so will be firmer.

16 months now with memory foam mattress - Tempur. I wish I knew this before, my sleep has improved drastically. Never going back to other types of mattress.

I always cringe If I see people being tired in the morning and them having some cheap mattress...

A good bed is one of the best investments possible, and given that it lasts let's say 10 years it is worth some thousands if that gives the best personal result.

Re: Need opinion: memory foam vs spring mattress? (+ where to buy)

Interesting to read the experiences here.

I used to have a spring mattress and constantly suffered from pain in the upper back/neck and tension headaches. I switched to memory foam 1.5 years ago and have had maybe 3 headaches since then. Maybe the old mattress wasn't the best anymore (it was not a cheap one, but I had had it for a while at the time), but regardless, the memory foam one has improved my life drastically, no kidding.

Re: Need opinion: memory foam vs spring mattress? (+ where to buy)

I went to a few places to look at box spring beds and memory foam. I’m a very hot sleeper so memory foam was out.

Ended up with a fabulous bed from Pfister in Dubendorf. Box spring, breathable topper. It has improved my quality of life drastically from a hard latex mattress. The bed is soft but extremely supportive and I look forward to going to bed.

My advice is to spend a significant time testing beds out. To the horror of my partner I had a bit of a snooze in Pfister on each of our trips. The staff didn’t even blink an eye. I was thorough because I’m the one with back pain.

I tested out various price ranges and ended up with a bed My partner and I are both happy with. My method was to replicate an extremely expensive bed that was basically a cloud for about half the price. Mission achieved.

All done it was just under 5000. It has been worth Every penny.

Plus Pfister has a guarantee.

Could you explain this, please? Why would memory foam be unsuitable? Or: what does memory foam need, to be suitable?

From my own experience and the result of a thorough discussion with the staff at Pfister and other mattress stores, I learned that box springs were the best idea for hot sleepers. Having grown up with these beds in Canada, I've never experienced the extreme heat that I did with a latex mattress in Europe. It drove me insane to the point where I wondered if I had some kind of horrible disease.

Anyway, to cut to the point, the staff highlighted that:
- Latex retains heat and doesn't breathe
- Box Springs distribute heat because they are full of pockets.
- Memory Foam - could be either depending on density, overall construction, etc... but will likely retain heat. I've slept on a few in my life (hotels, friends' houses) always found myself a bit hot.

So, a box spring seemed logical.

In the end, I ended up adding a super squishy foam topper for some lush factor. It's not very dense so it doesn't retain much heat. I'm perfectly warm and snuggly and far from feverish.

Hope that helps!

Yep, have one for several years now (vitapur) and I'm very happy with it.

It's a bitch to lift or move though.

This. The British prices are wonderful (a fraction of what I payed) but I would never buy one without testing it either.

That wouldn't work for me; I need a solid 8 hours. For two main reasons:

1) It's not called beauty sleep for nothing.

2) Being chased through endless subterranean corridors by unspecified, relentless, and UNSTOPPABLE monsters isn't something that should be rushed.

Just flipped my mattress over and it's something called an Isabelle from Bico. I bought it 15 years ago after a good go on every mattress in the shop and I'm still very happy with it.

Re: Need opinion: memory foam vs spring mattress? (+ where to buy)

I've had a Tempur (medium/hard) for the last 10 years and every time I get into bed expirations of joy abound. It was a real revelation going from a cheap IKEA mattress to a proper one.

I am in the process of replacing it, probably with a Bico (Swiss made) - the Vitaluxe Select

I had terrible back issues prior to the Tempur, which certainly alleviated the issues but ultimately I had to turn to a lifestyle change (Pilates) to really address the problem.

I am of the opinion that you should spend as much as possible on a mattress. You spend 1/4 to 1/3 of your life on it, be good to yourself.
