Rent application with certification of residency - should I even bother?

Hi,

I applied for my B permit a month ago and haven't received it yet. I've got now only the certification of residence (Declaration de residence principale.)

There is a studio I really want to apply for but I heard that my chances are basically zero without the B permit. So should I even bother to apply if I have now only the certification or residence?

And another question. Some people suggested me that I should get a recommendation letter from by boss. Should I really ask him?

Thanks, Tom

I didn't get the actual permit for many months.. The attestation along with my employment contract was all that I needed to do everything, find a house, open bank account, insurances, car.. etc etc..

Yes, if you can get a letter from him. If a landlord/agency knows your company "backs", i.e. you're not likely to get fired 5 minutes after you start work then it may help. Better yet if there's someone in the HR department who can go with you to view the studio to help make your case and answer any questions that may come up.

I should've added more details. I am a PhD candidate at EPFL (so I won't get fired 5 min afterwards). And by my boss I meant my supervisor. Do you think I should ask him?

Anyway, my primary question was if it is possible to get a deal without the B permit (just with Declaration de residence principale). Apparently, it worked for John_H. So I'll come visit the studio next week and try my luck.

Obviously as much supporting documentation as you may have is good! Take this declaration, contract, passport and a nice employer letter won't do any harm.

Even if you don't get this place - either because or not because of your permit, it's good to go see what you might get for you price / area.

It's old fashioned here in Switzerland.. People like letters and signatures and handshakes. Go, be nice, you might not get this one but might get another from same agent.. etc.

In our lab at EPFL it's standard practice to give newcomers a reference letter for an apartment. It seems to have helped some people.

Re: Rent application with certification of residency - should I even bother?

Hi, I'm writing this so it can help someone in future who's in a similar situation as I was.

It is possible to get apartment without a B permit (background: I'm an EU citizen)! Maybe I was lucky but I got the studio I wanted!

The documents I sent with my application include:
- declaration de residence principale,
- declaration from l'Office des poursuites,
- letter from EPFL that I'll be employed at least 3 more years,
- my work contract and one salary slip (I had just one because I had just started).

I wish good luck to anyone who is searching for an apartment.
