Apartment size

We're currently considering our criteria ('must haves' and 'like to haves') for our impending move to Vaud - we're looking anywhere between Nyon and Lausanne.

We're used to fairly large living spaces from our times in Shanghai and US, where we had 200sqm+. We know we can forget that type of space, and we do have realistic expectations, but I don't know what the lower limit should be...110sqm, 130sqm? We've never lived in anything so small before.

Does anyone know how they measure the apartments that are advertised? Does it include the entire floor space including stair wells, hallways etc?

We are a family of 4 (two growing kids that will need their own rooms), and I know its a personal decision and depends on how much furniture you have etc. etc. but I'd be interested in what size of apartment other families have managed with, and whether they find it adequate or too small?
