Re: Best Zurich neighborhood to live for couple with baby

OP, basically any commune along the Silver Coast is within the 25-min range to Enge. But I'd personally recommend Thalwil. Superb public transport access, near to the lake, and has family-friendly environment. However, I'd say you'd only find a few options of apartment with garden for the said budget in Thalwil, and hence, competition might be quite stiff. Good luck!

Adliswil has more options re. housing at (relatively) decent price. It can be difficult to find something in Thalwil.
But you're right about the rent: if you want to live in a house and not an apartment with a bit of garden on the ground floor...the rent starts from 4000 chf in that area.

Hey there, good food for thought. My hobby is gardening so I thought having a small garden to grow things would be great. We're also open to indoor sun rooms or patios to save the plants during winter.

Thanks Nick. We're not sure what the relocation package includes yet. Most likely, we'll be staying in corporate housing near Google for the first month or two. Hopefully, we find an place shortly after that - fingers crossed.

I love the transportation in Zurich and the ease of Google Maps- makes life easier.

The other alternative to a garden if you specifically like growing things (rather than lying in it, for example) is an allotment.
There are loads around but usually a waiting list. These are obviously outside Zurich city but there are plenty in the towns along the lake shore.

Seefeld is great, but at 2850 you will struggle to find a flat which is big enough, particularly with a garden. Also to go to Google you will need at least two trams, unless you are by Bellevue.

I vote for Wollishofen! It was great here. You're still in the city and with direct connection to Google or Enge, but it's quiet, green and the lake is near...

AFAIK, the quarter with the highest kid-density is Friesenberg.

That's the region between Triemli and Strassenverkehrsamt, basically.
Below the Üetliberg.

Based on this single datapoint:

Personal gardens you won't find there.
Also, most of these are in the hands of Genossenschaften, where Google-employees probably don't need to apply.

The aforementioned allotments are hard to get. You can find information about them here:

Re: Best Zurich neighborhood to live for couple with baby

Well, Google is quite central - so nearby housing will provide you with a good base to explore which areas you like.

We live in Albisrieden which is at the end of Tram 3 and has good transport links into the city centre. In our neighbourhood there are a lot of young families, and plenty of carfree space for children to play. I don't work at Google but I can get to their office by bike within about 15-20 mins. Plus we have the Altstetterwald - a lovely forest with excellent walking possibilities - and Uetliberg right on our doorstep.

Cheers,
Nick

Or a place with a decent sized balcony or terrace
