Best Zurich neighborhood to live for couple with baby

Hey folks,
I've been reading through so many threads about Zurich areas to live and still, have a hard time narrowing down the list.

Which neighborhood do you recommend for:
- less then 25 min commute from Google office (near Zurich Enge tram stop)
- 3.5 or more rooms + garden
- budget: 2850 francs/month
- markets, shops, parks (not really interested in bars/lounges)

We don't mind living outside the city (more in the countryside) as long as we can get to Google within 25 min commute.

Thanks a bunch!

Yup, if you don't want to live in or around Enge with just a short walking commute, Thalwil would be good. Outside the city, right next to the lake, big international community and lots of trains straight to Enge.

Which also describes pretty much anywhere down that side of the lake to Richterswil

Hm, about the best neighborhood... I agree the above mentioned places are very nice and fit your criteria well, but if you really want a garden (and not just so called Sitzplatz - patio), I would say you would need to rethink and either forget about the garden and decide for a terrace instead (look for attika or terrassenhaus) or you should go house hunting with the idea - "my new neighborhood would be the one where I will find the garden". Been there, done that. It is very hard to find a property with a decent garden here. Wish you good luck, though.

Re: Best Zurich neighborhood to live for couple with baby

This may sound like a very silly question, but what do you want the garden for? If you have dogs, you are maybe looking for a safe area where the dogs can run off a little of their surplus energy. If you love growing your own veg and fruit, you need an area which is suitable for that. But I've known folk with a garden whose children always played out on the street (safe area) as that's where the other chidren played. I've known people who had a garden - and half the neighbourhood kids to go with it. I've known folk who lived in a flat and shared a large garden area with children's playground, sand pit, table tennis table, football area, grill and tables and benches, which, in the end, meant that although it wasn't their own, it had the plus side of a lot of room, a lot of grass and trees and none of the work. Think on these things...

Without knowing what kind of relocation package Google offer...do they provide some kind of initial fix-up apartment when you first arrive? If yes, I would try to get something reasonably central so you can easily get to work and have a chance to find your feet before settling on an area you really like.

Public transport is extremely good and Google Maps somehow manages to find bike routes that go via the Google office.

Cheers,
Nick

On Google's salaries, Kilchberg. Or even Wollerau - it is within 25 minutes from Enge. You'd have to buy a car to hit that target time, but tax savings alone will easily pay for it.
Edit: unless you have pay the money to uncle sam as I suspect you may from your location: SAN FRANCISCO, in that case nevermind.

Garden and under 2850 Fr rent is no problem in either.

Live in Baden or Zug. Suburban towns of Zurich are mostly uninteresting and pointless - no mountains, no countryside.

Matter of opinion. I would never consider to live in Baden or Zug, which are wholly uninteresting and pointless.... Zürich is great IMHO.

What are you talking about?

I've lived in Au and Horgen and had waterfalls, forests and hills on my doorstep within walking distance.
I even ran to the local ski resort and back so it couldn't have been that far to the mountains.
Plus you have the lake for swimming in the summer.

To the OP: Both flats had a garden. You may be hard pressed to find a place with a garden in Thalwil within your price range.

There are direct, and fast trains to Enge from all along that side of the lake.

Re: Best Zurich neighborhood to live for couple with baby

Have you thought about what type of flat you have as a preference? Old with charm or new, modern?

If you are partial to an older apartment in an older house there are tons of great lovely jugendstil places in some of the older suberbs of Zurich city. 8006, 8044 for example. It's the other side of town for work but still a very easy, short commute by public or car.

The issue is you are competing with the universities for cheap apartments in these areas. You just have to check online everyday, have your papers, personal CV, references etc ready to go. If you find a place you like to best chance is to contact and view the place and apply straight away to the landlord after charming the pants off them. This pretty much goes for all apartments though...

Good luck wth the hunting! Let us know where you end up. CH is awesome and all of the suggestions on here are great btw, so you really can't go wrong!

Been too long in Switzerland? OP is willing to pay up to CHF 2850 per month, I personally do not find that cheap

Well, if we're going to start throwing random place names into the equation, I'd recommend Glarus: dirt cheap accommodation, so many mountains you can hardly see the sky, big gardens, a family-friendly lifestyle...

It's a bit more than 25 minutes from Enge, but the journey is quite a pleasant one.

There. That's complicated matters somewhat.

Re: Best Zurich neighborhood to live for couple with baby

Hi icecreamist,
Most families living in the city go for EG apartments which are basically ground floor apartments in a 3-4 story building with garden access. Some of these "garden areas" may be enclosed by shrubbery so they are exclusively for you to use. Even if the next door neighbour has their "patio" area next to you. people usually respect each other's privacy. You can find such apartments all over Zurich if you want to live in the city. Low tax areas like Thalwil with direct access to Zurich are also a good idea but I doubt you can get a house with a garden there for an affordable price. I personally do not like Adliswil although it seems to be very popular with people working at Google (assuming you will be working there).

Edit: Just read the budget. In the areas mentioned EG apartments will be your choice. A house will be out of budget.

Re: Best Zurich neighborhood to live for couple with baby

child friendly area near Google is also Binz - and the newer complex Binzallee - lots of krippes for the baby and lots of families live there - you are close to the city and also not too far from the 'nature' at brunau and train station up to the top of the uetliberg. there is also a great pediatrician at sihlcity which is a 10 minute walk away.
but it depends what you want - zurich is quite a small city - and everywhere is very child friendly - plus there is a good social network of mums and expat mums in zurich to guide you along the way.

Almost anywhere in the Horgen Bezirk with a train station is within 25min to Google's office.

Are you a Noogler? Did you get that hat?

Sorry, meant to say cheaper. As in the cheaper apartments that you find in those areas are the ones most popular to uni folk and therefore tough to find.
