Moving to St. Gallen

Hi Folks-
We're pretty sure we will move to St. Gallen this coming spring or summer. I've visited a bunch of times, and it seems like a nice place to raise our three kids (ages 6, 3 & 1). I was wondering if anyone out there could give us some tips regarding where to live (we've heard that St. Georgen is very nice) and general advice on family life in the city. Are there a lot of expats in St. Gallen? Would anyone be willing to meet with us and show us around next time we come to town? My husband is Swiss, and I grew up speaking German, so we're ok in terms of language, but it would still be nice to find some expats to connect with.

Re: Moving to St. Gallen

Hi Mountaingirl,

I have (almost) moved to St. Gallen in the last few months. I work nearby in Heerbrugg 3 weeks of every month but I am still in the UK for the remaining one week. I have an apartment in St Gallen. As I'm here without my family I can't comment on good places to live for you, but I have been to the St. Georgen area and it does look appealing.

I'm not sure there's many expats in St Gallen, at least I haven't been able to find any.

Hi Jonathan!

Thanks for your response. Now I know that there is at least one expat in St. Gallen . I'm a little hesitant to move but it sounds like the city has a bunch of good things to offer. Anyone else out there willing to share their experiences and advice?

Re: Moving to St. Gallen

I studied and lived in St Gallen for four years recently. While the town has a certain rustic charm which I imagine could appeal to many more senior members of this forum, it isn't exactly a hotbed of contemporary culture and activity.

It also doesn't fare well on the hummus scale (my crude indicator of suitability for expats), as it was the last city/large town in Switzerland where hummus and sushi were available to buy in most Coop and Migros shops.

That said, the university has many international students and a vibrant campus community more akin to UK/US universities than the other Swiss unis.

Hi, my wife and I have recently moved (we are expats ) to Switzerland, and looking at places in St Gallen to rent out, as my work is in Heerbrugg.

Have you moved there now? How's your experience been so far?

Re: Moving to St. Gallen

Hello all ,

I will become an expat else . I would like to receive some tips . I get crazy looking for flats or apartments . For the moment I have gotten an option here :

www.hotel-taucher.ch

This hotel offers apartments/ studios furnished with bath , fridge etc an option of kitchen in your own room or for sharing .And it is good way to start in Switerzland.

But my workplace is near to Alterhein . Anyone know another options in this area similar to the above?

I will appreciate the help of all members of this forum.

Regards

Jorge

Hi Jorge. Welcome to the area.

Check out Comparis: https://en.comparis.ch/immobilien/default.aspx Under the property type try the "furnished apartment" or "room shared in accommodation" options.

You can also set the number of rooms, price, radius around Alterhein, and whichever options you want.

There are plenty of non-Swiss here, but we keep camouflaged among the locals

Actually that's only half-joking, I get the impression (it might be just my imagination) that there isn't so much of an enclosed and separate "expat community" here, but more like multiple mixed groups of all sorts of nationalities, including Swiss and non-Swiss.

@Moutaingirl, if you have moved to St Gallen already then I'm sure you've found your way around by now - and having kids of those ages makes it much easier to meet people and get involved in the various groups.

Of course St Gallen is not going to be the ideal city for everyone but I really like its size (not so small that there's nothing going on, not so big you can't walk across it), the city centre is beautiful and the area around the city is great for exploring. But you're completely right, the restaurants can be quiet in the evening and on Sunday the whole city is bizarrely empty.
